axle seals
Hey, noticed both rear axle seals just went at the same time, something further to look at or coincidence? wanna hear your thoughts..
thanks also was looking at a how to and this guy took the axles out completely but he was replacing the bearings at the same time.. do you have to do all this just to go seals? |
Yes, you have to pull the axles to do the seals. Not too big of a deal, the axle bearings are another story. Might want to search on youtube. You can rent the needed specialty tools. Might want to pick up a Chilton's manual while you are at it.

Yes the axles need to be pulled, and depending on mileage you may want to do the bearings. Pulling the axles is easy, diff cover comes off and pull two c clips , slide off sattelite shaft(forgetting the term for some reason, also shaft locked in with 8mm bolt) and pull on the axles. Replace seals, clean diff and diff cover, aplly gasket rtv, fill with oil( and ford additive if limited slip diff) and thats it. Of course you have to remove caliper and rotors.

On a side note both of mine leaked at the same time, just did the seals, nothing else and has been good for 60k.

yeah wasnt planning on doing the bearings, i have 82,000km on it.. when are the bearings recommended to do? if they are easy with the proper tools maybe i should do them
|
As easy as the seals are to replace, I wouldnt mess with the bearings unless you are having an issue. Check the bearings and axle for wear, if they look good, leave them alone.

Could you post a pic of your axle seal leak? I'd like to see this for myself.
|
Yeah i will post one for you tomorrow as it is dark here already.
And okay will do! Thanks, think theyre fine but will look further. |

Picture didn't turn out. I have a leak too and I'm wondering if it is the same thing you have. I'll post mine sometime soon.
