Ok, heres the verdict, theres a shop down the street from where my dad works, came in $500 cheaper than ford did. And hes gonna re-diagnose it to make sure they wern't b.s.ing me. I was swinging to trade my truck in, they were gonna give me 6k for my truck, and if i put the 6k i was gonna put into the motor as a down payment, i would have been able to get a 2010 Fx4 for around 280/ month. Of corse my dad said no, even though it is my truck, and my money lol

took my truck in for a misfire under 1000 rpm on cyl 3, they come back with a compression test saying the piston is shot, either dump the truck or put a new motor in it. And the price he gave me for the new motor was $6200 ford remanufactured or 4700 for a used engine with 96k miles. Im not too familiar with motor prices for these trucks but ive been told by a couple people that sounded too high. Thoughts?
replacing rings certainly does not warrant an entire engine replacement...
the only way you would really need to replace a whole motor is if you grenaded a rod, gouged the cylinder wall beyond a bore/hone or some other catastrophic damage. if its just 1 cylinder this seems a tad extreme, although i do not know all the details obviously.

If you have ever rebuilt an engine for a customer, you do not know what you will find when opening that engine up and you let them know that. The customer wants a firm price. Not variables.
Long block re manufactured engines are the only way you will get a firm cost on engine replacement.
Used engines might, but it is a pig in a poke as far as what you will get from the bone yard and what vehicle did it come out of?
You are right about the leak down test.

They told me they stuck a little camera down in the cylinder, and a compression test before that, but when i asked to see the compression test for myself, they would not show it to me.

I'm going through something similar. I took mine to a shop because of idling problems and he told me that I have low oil pressure and told me he might be able to fix it for $1500 buy if I need another motor they are hard to find and looking at around $7000. I'm doing the same thing you are and getting another shop to look at it. Best of luck to you.
