Default Draining the vacuum lines.

I just had this happen to my 05. I replaced the IWE solenoid, but continue to hear the same grinding noise. Do the vacuum lines just pull out of the hub area? Or do I need to remove the hubs? Thanks

I'm going right away to my local dealership to pick up that new solenoid and plastic cover. I have not had any problems with my truck, and I hope an PRAY I never do. It sounds very fustrating and annoying to have that grinding sound. I read every post in this thread, only question I still have is how do you clean out the lines, if needed. Would just a simple air gun from my compressor do the trick???

THANKS I started experiencing the grinding sound intermittently the past couple of days (after several days of rain) and was able to get it to stop by engaging and disengaging the 4wd. I'm replacing the solenoid this afternoon if the dealer has one. Are you aware of any way to purge the water from the vacuum system?

Ditto on the thanks to the OP and all who've contributed. I've not hadthis problem and was not aware of it until today when reading this entire post. Went right out and checked and my 06 Lariat 4x4 - bought used - has the old part. Going online to order the new one as soon as this posting is written. You know what they say about an ounce of prevention...

And thanks especially to the OP for the way you titled this thread.. Had it been "Need to replace solenoid" I probably never would have read it. Your title grabbed my attention and made me read... Thanks!!

Default Thank You!

I went out Friday and got the part. I changed it in 10 minutes and my truck has been working great ever since. Thanks to AllStar Ford in Denham Springs, LA and Robinson Brothers in Baton Rouge. I had to go to both of them to get the right part, but it was worth it. They were both very helpful, but I never could have done it without this forum!

Hello All,

Not a newbie to Fords or fixin's....

However, I needed to reply to this thread, as my Brother is having issues w/ his 04 F150 4x4 again... I initially used this thread for the prior fix we did on his F150. It was exhibiting the "grinding" noises associated w/ an IWE crapping out. Unfortunately, when his driver's side started grinding he was doing 65+ on the highway, no way to really avoid an instant on failure as such, so the hub assembly got chewed up pretty good. So, we purchased a brand new hub and installed it. The local Ford Dealer also had installed a brand new IWE solenoid as well (due to the truck being in the shop for other repairs - and after we found this site explaining how to do the fix ourselves).

I don't know the initial IWE replacement part # that the Ford Dealer installed on his truck, nor do I know if it WAS a revised part or not....

Fast forward about 3 months after fixing the driver's side hub bearing assembly... now the passenger side did the same (grinding again). We also pulled off both vac lines on L & R side and made sure they were clear of any debris for both repairs. We installed a new passenger side hub assembly and w/ both repairs, everything was torqued back to Ford specs - and all was well up until last night....

The truck is AGAIN starting w/ the damn grinding noise at the hub.

He asked me what to do now, since the vehicle has both brand new L & R hub assemblies w/ less than 3k miles on each - and the vac lines don't have any holes, cracks, water, debris in them (he checked them again today).

So, I told him to go to Ford, get another IWE solenoid since I have no idea if the replaced the original w/ the SAME "bad" IWE and not a revised one or what....

He goes to Ford and the parts guy gives him another IWE solenoid - and is telling him that "this was just updated and supercedes the one you have now". My brother says it's sealed in a Ford plastic bag, not a box (like many others have shown on here) - and that the part number on the bag reads : 6L3Z-9H465-B. The other number on there he says reads: AF30E.

The parts guy is trying to tell him this is the new IWE - however, from everything I had read on here, everyone says the revised part is "6L3Z-9E441-A (CX-2117)".

Can someone please carlify if the IWE has been revised AGAIN and if the part number 6L3Z-9H465-B references a revised part or the original "old" part that will only fail again? The Ford Dealer also charged him $62 for the dang part!

Also, is there anything else in the 4x4 system that needs to be checked if the vehicle has new hubs, good vac lines and a good IWE???? The Ford parts guy was trying to tell him something about new revised actuators for the F-Series 4x4's that exhibit this grinding problem, and that the cost is $110 per side.... What the heck is he talking about???

Any help is really appreciated!!!
Phil

If you are smart you will listen! This just happened to me, they covered most of it with powertrain warranty. But not the solinode $ 120.00 + 100.00 deducible.

I am now on my second solenoid. The first one fixed the grinding for about 8 months or so. Then the grinding started up again. This time only at speeds above about 30 mph. It sounds like only the right side is making the noise. Are the hubs an easy fix? Or do you have to be a certified mechanic to do it? I am sure the hubs are damaged because it still makes the noise after the new solenoid. I just had to have the engine replaced about 4 months ago( $5000 ). I need to get this fixed for a reasonable price or I will probably push it off a cliff.

The solenoid switch is located on the right side firewall behind the battery.I replaced mine&no more problems. No shield came with the new one so I wrapped the switch up with aluminum foil.,Pete
