Anybody with leaf experience.
So, I got an 05 with the 5.4. I work it pretty hard and i believe i've either cracked a leaf or just really worn out my springs. Either way, i'm looking to replace them. I haul 1-2 tons in the bed regularly so i was planning on going with heavier duty springs. Rockauto sells UCF and DAYTON 2400# leaf packs. The DAYTONs are $375 a piece and the UCFs are $237 Does anybody have any experience with either? Its a work truck so im not too worried about the ride being stiffer but i don't want to be kicked in the butt every pebble. how much rougher do you think it'll ride?
How much longer are you going to use this truck actively vs how long have you had it? I wore my stock springs out, I changed them at 165000kms. I opted to replace them with the same 3 leaf pack, not the HD pack, I opted for airbags instead. I carry 1000lbs in the bed 24/7 with up to 1800-2000lbs when I'm camping or hauling my quad or some other amazing circumstance at work.
4000lbs is excessive. Make sure your tires are rated for such weight if you choose to ignore your other weight ratings. I wouldn't describe myself as surprised if I watched a LT tire explode under an overloaded truck.
What I'm saying is, I would expect the cheaper springs to wear out faster, but if your stock ones lasted till now, do you honestly picture yourself still sacking this truck out 3 years down the road? If yes, opt for the more expensive springs, if not well I'd cheap out right meow, with the air bag option always open down the road...
If you do it yourself get new bolts/nuts and u-bolts and nuts and check your shackles to make sure they're okay. That way you can just cut the bolts instead of messing around getting bolts off/out. You save a lot of time cutting all the bolts opposed to trying to wiggle around the fuel tank and break the nuts on the u-bolts etc.
