Any thoughts on the new commercial for the synthetic oil?

I already pushed my old blazer I had with the synthetic. I'd go about 5 to 6 months before change. But I never really did ALOT of milage. Probably 7k a year at most. What are your thoughts on this new commercial?
Amsoil has been stating that since the 70's.

Some time ago there was a test using NYC Taxis where they monitored differing oil change intervals and ran some 60k miles without an oil change.

Group A, Unit 100: Control, Conventional Petroleum oil, 3,000-mile drain interval
Group B, Unit 076: AMSOIL, 6,000-mile drain interval
Group C, Unit 070: AMSOIL, 12,000-mile drain interval
Group D, Unit 074: AMSOIL, No oil changes, 60,000-miles

It makes a lot of $$$ for companies selling oil and filters.

I still believe in changing the oil in mower's etc. at least once a year-before you store it for the winter. I took some mowers apart in shop class when I was younger, and we found those that didn't change the oil had excessive pitting in the cylinders and piston ring issues. You've been very lucky in doing what you have done and not experience some engine issues. Oil changes are cheap insurance.

One of the biggest things though is trying to break the stigma of the 3K oil change... Times and technology have definitely changed, yet there's people still changing religiously at 3K.
The 3K oil change is for those who buy the non synthetic oils. In that case, every 3K is best. If you go the extra cash and buy synthetics, then 5 to 6K (or more depending on how you use the vehicle) is fine.

I work in the industry, and I'm amazed how many vehicles come in with NO oil on the dipstick. Not many check it anymore like in the old days

I would have no problem going a year on oil changes on any motor other than ours. The VCT system in our trucks is so sensitive to oil pressure and I just wouldn't want to risk it. I may start using that stuff on my wifes Explorer though.

Since I run full syn I only change every 7k miles or so. But then, those 7k miles are usually put on in a year's time or more, so...

That's what I do, and that's the interval the Ford owners manual says to do.

Why didn’t you change it? I actually enjoy changing oil.

Says Jiffy Lube, and only Jiffy Lube. My 1999 Jeep 4.0L manual says change it every 7,500 with conventional oil! Late model Grand Caravan says every 10,000 with oil that meets the MD-6395 standard, most conventional oils meet this standard.

I believe you are referring to Mobil 1 Annual Protection. It is marketed at 1 year, 20k mile oci's. This oil is huge right now over on BITOG. The general consensus is that so far, it is not worth it at the current $49 /5 quart price. Instead, the better deal, price wise is getting 2 Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15k oils for $25 /5 quarts. There is no used oil analysis so far on this stuff, so we really don't know if it is worth the price that Mobil is asking. Personally, the way our trucks are picky on oil, I just get what ever is on sale and run it for 5k with a MC 820s.

I would fall under the 6k or less mileage club. My F150 and Jeep wrangler will both see 5-6k miles on them in a year. I'll be changing the oil once a year in both using Mobile 1 full synthetic. I'm obviously checking to ensure I'm not low between oil changes. I save $70 a year doing it that way which isn't much but $70 is $70. Changing the oil at 6 months and 2-3k miles isn't going to change anything. If something engine related happens it's not the oils fault at that point....

Because I saved myself over 20 years of oil changes and all that cast off oil that had to be disposed. I mowed a lot of grass with that mower and in the end, it was ethanol that killed it. It just wasn't worth replacing the carb on it so it went to the dump. It didn't owe me anything.

By the way, I run avgas in all my lawn equipment and portable generator now. No ethanol, 100 octane low lead and I mix it for the chain saw and leaf blower. It's more expensive than pump gas but I can't buy no ethanol gas anywhere within 50 miles of me. Never any problems now with leaving that gas in the equipment in the off-season.
