ok well i know this is a repeating thread but its really hard to find anyone who has done the install or posted pics of what it takes or a step by step thing....for a rear auto dim mirror on a truck that didnt have it....so i have a an FX4 w/o the auto-dim mirror in it now and would like to install one....so need some help with some things

what wires go where? and to what? (power,grnd,etc)...

what year taurus mirror would i have to find to do the install correct? and

what about the harness that plugs into the back of mirror?

and how will i know if my truck is pre-wired for the mirror already?

any and all info for this mod would be appreciated. thanks

hopefully i'll be able to answer more of your questions soon, so stay tuned.

first off, i doubt you are pre-wired. mine wasn't.
secondly, the mirror i bought was from an 08 taurus and my truck is an 08, so i figured i'd be good there. but i don't see an issue if the mirror comes with the pigtail attached. you can always do a splice job like i hope to, although i will have to determine which wires are which.

btw, the same mirrors are also found in expeditions. i have a friend with a late model exped and it has the exact auto-dim mirror that i bought from a taurus.

What does the Taurus mirror have in the way of wiring? If it's as simple as a power and ground lead, connect the power lead of mirror to a "ignition switched" hot lead, and the ground lead to any suitable ground. The radio uses a switched ground lead; it's a pink wire with black stripe.

ahh ok....well if anyone has detailed step by step pics or directions would be great so i can see if i wanna dabble with this soon

is it a pain in the ***** to check if the harness has the wiring on my truck for it already??...and how would i do so?

well i just bought an auto-dim rear view mirror from an 07 taurus off of ebay for $10 ....def got a deal and a half if you ask me....comes with wiring and now i just need to get it in the mail and figure out how i will hook it all up....

also if anyone has done it and wants to shed light or pictures..lol...on this all it'd be great

not sure if this is a dumb question... but why dont you buy an auto-dim mirror from another f-150?.... my 04 Lariat has one

The taurus mirror is the same as the f150 mirror....plus you can get a taurus mirror for less $$ then an F150 one....and reason for asking about wiring it up is a truck that didnt come with one factory more then likely doesnt have the connection harness for it at all so it has to be hard wired

anyone know wires that i can clip into to make the mirror work as ignition powered? and somewhere i can ground to? thats under headliner or close to?

i have the compass that clips onto mirror currently for the dash....anyone know what color wires are which there?

I just installed my auto dim rear view a couple of months ago. The mirror I purchased came out of an F-150 from LKQ used auto parts. They specialize in late model Fords. Anyway I used the first 3 wires. White with a blue tracer is the switched hot lead which I got off of the fuse box. The green with a yellow tracer is the reverse wire which I did not use. (It just turns the auto dim off when you go into reverse). And last but not least the black which is ground that I tapped off of the dome light. I works great! The mirror I bought was also the type that would dim the side view mirror, so there was extra wires (5 total) , you just don't use the extras. FYI the diagram that DA-DRE1 supplied is very accurate. Another way to figure it out is to Google Electrochromatic rear view mirror install. You'll see that Gentex pretty much supplies most of the big 3, and them some.
