another 05 5.4 tick /slap troubleshooting thread.
Yup 05 4x4 XLT SCREW 140+K miles. suffered the spark plug failure experience DIY'ed it, not fun.
Truck has been generally dead reliable but have noticed a decrease in power and mileage...no codes thrown
Recently Ive been noticing a ticking /slapping noise that is pronounced on cold start up then disappears until under load acceleration.
Seems to be coming from the Pass side but hard to tell from the cabin.
Ive researched the MANY threads for a definitive diagnoses procedure but ...nope.
Seems possible causes are injectors tensionors phasers manifold ect ect
Id like to get ahead of a catastrophic (costly) failure if that is a likely outcome left unaddressed
Any BTDT assistance please

Probably a failed tensioner and the chain slapping around until it builds up oil pressure with higher RPM. Only way to know for sure is to get in there... at the very least, pull the valve covers to check the cams and followers, perhaps you could get down inside the front cover with a boroscope to check the chains, but if going that far I'd go the full monte.
