Default Ashtray Rattle

My ashtray has rattled almost since I bought the truck. The dealer has repaired it 3 times and each time after about 3 months it starts all over again. I put a 1/4 inch thick felt pad on each side of the ashtray and that stoped most of the rattle.

Default Ashtray Rattle 04-08 F150s

Found out what was causing mine. Had a Lease and purchased used 07 with the same problem. If you pull ashtray/cup holder out, you will see the track system it slides on. With it out lightly pound on the dash area. I found it to be the track unit itself. There is a stud with rubber coating on the back of it which you can barley see. Move the track unit and you should hear the noise. I balled up small piece of Duct tape and placed between track unit and metal brace in back where the stud goes into. Fixed both trucks.

I pulled the metal ashtray out of mine and it stopped rattling.

What kind of silicone do I need to use? Caulk or gasket stuff (permatex)?

Here's how I fixed mine...

1. Remove the ashtray.
2. Pry the cover off at the top. There are 3 clips.
3. Insert a foam gasket between the cover and the ashtray (I used a gasket from an exterior electrical outlet).
4. Squeeze like hell to get the cover to latch back onto the ashtray.
5. Reinstall the ashtray.
6. Drive and hit every bump you can find, enjoying the silence.

Yeah, I saw that in your thread but Ive got the dash ashtray, not the console one. You were the guy that told me to search for how to fix mine.

I just pulled the metal ashtray out of the cupholder/ashtray drawer. I dont think theres room for any kind of foam and me squeezing= me breaking.
