Default It all started with a general checkover

I bought a used 2005 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD 5.4 Triton a month or so ago. I noticed a rough idle and the check engine light was on. I read the code and it showed cylinder 4 misfire. I read up a little on this error and figured it was a bad ignition coil since the heater lines can drip on this part.

I decided to take it to our local Ford garage and have this done along with a general check over so it would be ready for the winter.

Garage calls me and says I should replace the spark plugs too since the truck has 128K miles on it. They also found a rear pinion seal leak and my rear brake rotors need replaced (Too thin to turn down).

Long story short, they broke 4 of the 8 spark plugs and one of the plugs dropped pieces down the cylinder. I was looking at head removal and they said as long as it was this far torn down I should get new timing chains. I was pretty upset because I was looking at a $4K repair bill for a truck I owned one month that I paid $8K for. Well the truck has zero rust and is in fine shape so I negotiated the bill down to $2,300.

I am not sure I should have sunk this much money into the truck but it should be good for a long time now (I hope). What do you guys think, worth it?

Does the final tab include the timing chain replacement? If so, are they replacing just the chains? If just the chains, that isn't buying you much. The real culprits that cause valvetrain issues are the phasers and chain guides. Find out exactly what components they are replacing and let us know.

I don't see VCT solenoids listed on the bill. What exactly do they do? It doesn't look like they are very hard to replace.

Changes your camshaft position in relevance to your engine speed. Advance/retard

Screens can become clogged/collapsed and they'll cease to function properly

Funny, Ford Tech says that the Cam position sensor NEVER fails on this motor. Was this a Dealer?
