Default Aftermarket Cam Phaser Failure

I recently had an owner replace his timing chains, guides, tensioners & phasers with an aftermarket kit on his '07 F150 5.4L with 94k because of a tensioner gasket failure.

He drove it approximately 200 miles after repair before it stalled. It then would attempt to start but was evident that it had low compression. I removed front cover only to find that the pin had sheared on the left phaser causing the phaser to destroy the face of the cam which resulted in oil pressure loss to the top end. The housing was cracked at pin on the right phaser which would have eventually failed.

Hopefully this will save someone from the same mistake this customer made, Bottom line is this: pay now or pay later. Unfortunately, this owner paid later with an engine replacement

Looks to be dorman junk. Mine did the same thing started making a ratcheting clank sound upon startup. Thought it must be tensioner again but wasn't. Luckily I caught it before it messed the cam up.

Ah, much better, thanks.

Do you know who put them in? Do you know if they used an impact or is it possible they over torqued them?

The owner did the install but I'm not aware if he used an impact. The torque seemed adequate enough and the cam bolts also appeared to be new as well. He did a very good job on the repair but just happened to be one of the unfortunate ones that learned the hard way. But he now has a 3/36k warranty on the new engine.
