So after putting 8 or 10K on the 5W-20 I recently performed another oil change. As I posted a while back, I went with another factory filter and 7 quarts of top-o'-the-line Amsoil 5W-30. And after a few miles it definately helped quiet down the ticking! No doubt about it. The factory FL820S filter certainly seemed to help last oil change but the Amsoil synthetic made a big difference. Gradually I'm eliminating the ticking. I'm not looking for perfection on my high miles truck (the word beater is too strong of a term to describe it ... Heck I'm just happy the driver's leather seat is not ripped and the dvd still works for the kids) I'm going to see about the new VCT solenoids now as well. I didn't get a chance to try the stainless washer swap into the old solenoids but if I can get a pair of the new and improved ones I think I'll give those a go instead.

I have noticed that from time to time part numbers that get suggested on different forums based out of the USA aren't necessarily the same as those here in Canada. I found this out when I replaced a vacuum solenoid on the 4x4 system a while back. The number I gave the parts guy (that I had gleened from an online forum) didn't work on my Ford dealer's system. Hopefully I won't have that issue with the VCT solenoids.

The old solenoids with the raised idle still made it tick like mad.... Use your edge to bump the idle up if you have one...
Otherwise you may have a worn phaser which no solenoid will cure...
~600 rpm @ operating temp.

600 rpm at operating temp is a good idle in my book.. However, I've noticed that the majority of these trucks tend to idle at or around 500 to 550 rpm's, including mine.

Do you think its possible that a component on your drive belt system is putting an extra load on the motor to raise the idle? Maybe an alternator putting out a lower then normal voltage, or a pulley under some form of added restriction.

The only other explanation for your tick being incurable would be need to change a worn phaser, or maybe a possible blockage in the VCT valve body..

I just helped my buddy toss 2 new solenoids in his 06 f150 last night and his truck got even quieter then mine did. We took it for a ride and got his oil temps up to 180 on his edge, and the tick stayed gone.. He's running amsoil 5w-30 OE and needs an oil change bad. we seafoamed his valve bodies too. It does seem his injectors are not as noisy as mine... Prior to swapping these out, his phaser tick was soft, and not as loud as some of the other phasers that I've heard. He was told when he bought the truck last year that the phasers were replaced a few weeks before he bought the truck.
Long story short, the new solenoids should definitely silence the tick, or at least expose the need to replace a worn phaser.

Well, I'm starting to think that my diesel sound is from an exhaust leak. It's not there at cold engine idle, but does come on gradually after the engine is up to operating temp. Also, the sound seems to come from under the truck, rather than from the engine bay. I removed both the cam solenoid seal and the oil fill extension from the passenger valve cover. This creates a large hole on either side of the passenger side phaser. If that phaser , or even the phaser on the driver side, were causing the noise, I would think the diesel sound would get much louder. It didn't get louder at all. That tells me the noise isn't coming from the valve train, phaser, or timing chains. Combined with the gradual onset and sound source seeming to be from under the truck, I'm thinking exhaust. Also, the diesel idle sound is very quiet, not at all like most of the loud knocking I hear on YouTube. Think of the quietest diesel V8 you've ever heard idle, and mines quieter than that.

This was the engine at cold idle. No diesel sound.

This was the engine at hot idle. Sounds like a very quiet diesel. That video was before I replaced the plugs. After the new plugs, the diesel part of the hot idle sound has been about cut in half. Power and torque are very good. I can easily spin the tires from a dead stop on dry pavement (unloaded).

Mine does the same thing no knock when cold all the way up to it just getting to full operating temp then the tick comes in. Yours sounds slightly louder than mine. I haven't changed my plugs I got the truck like 9 months ago and hope they have been changed already but I have to check. My truck drives great and runs strong and I get decent gas mileage well decent for these trucks. It drives me a little crazy but ill deal for now.

Morning everyone. I posted in this thread in the beginning and thought I'd give an update. I am still running 5/30 and love it. I have switched back to 5/20 a few times to see if there was a difference. Boy is there. My problem came from a rough idle/misfire when coming to a stop. Replaced everything I could without tearing into the motor. And my issue was only happening during summer. I switched to the heavier stuff and now she runs like a top. 5/20 = junk. Cheers.

I was hesitant to switch to 5w-30. My 04 has a slight tick when hot but I've never been one to put a bandaid on anything.

Long story short I got curious and tried it yesterday. Just on driving it to work today I can tell it is significantly quieter at idle. I've got 150k on the truck, and I'm hoping to double that (I've done it in vehicles before). Stay tuned.
