thank you for your input. I think I will try the 5w-30 for now seing as though winter should be upon us although somdays I wonder if it will ever get cold here. However in the summer Ill definitely run 10w-40. thanks again!

After the 5w-30 swap I have noticed a VAST improvement in ticking, I haven't added any Lucas oil stabilizer at this point because I'm still debating if it's even necessary. I did use royal purple for the swap and so far it's yielded a .2% overall increase in milage and a detectable improvement in power, but nothing crazy.
To those people who are on the fence about running a different oil, I can safely say that if you want to get out of the 5w-20 box you may find yourself in, you can.
I will conclude that most people trade up to a new vehicle every 3 years, those people may not care about longevity and wear characteristics since they will be driving something else by the time the warranty expires anyway. That mentality is currently engrained in auto manufacturing itself and the whole buy it and keep it age seems to fading. The lighter 5w-20 oil is to make those warranty years a little more fuel efficient, and that's about it.
To the rest of us who buy it and drive it till the wheels fall off, all I can say is I would highly recommend you consider running a sae 5w-30 to a 10w-40 or even 5w-40 if you can find it.
And remember your 5w-30 or whatever oil you chose aside from straight sae oil, gets THICKER when it's warm and thinner when its cold, the higher the number the "thicker" or more Viscous it is.... The more viscosity the more protection (especially from heat and deposits).... The higher the viscosity, the more drag on the motor thus reducing efficiency, in exchange for longevity.... That's it!

I've always run the 5W-20 in my Fords. No problems, no noises (I don't own that problematic 5.4 though), and will continue to do so. In the talks I've had with the Ford techs, they have stated that what's in the owners manual for the climate that you live in, use the chart for viscosity recommended.
Here yet is another chest thumping oil thread to add to the many already circulating on this site, and the internet.

I was thinking about putting 5w-30 valvoline full synthetic in my 2004 5.4 with 140,000 miles. It has the " wonderful" phaser issue at hot temp. Would this oil make the noise go away or quiet down??

It might lessen the noise slightly, but if you have been running dino oil for 140,000 miles, I might suggest that you run semi-synthetic for one oil change, than go to full synthetic after that. Be prepared for the oil to turn black in a hurry when you go to full synthetic for the first oil change.

I've been using Mobil 1 5W-20 since new, then swithced to Mobil 1 0W-20 when it became available. Haven't notced any ticking noises, and use the truck to tow my 5000lb travel trailer most of the time. Took it to Yellowstone this summer with the trailer, didn't use one drop of oil. I've been happy and the 0W-20 does give a bit more gas mileage.
