2005 with 165k and I have owned it for 6 years and I am 3rd owner. 5-20 Valvoline synthetic blend, hi mileage. Changed every 2500 miles. Recently timing chains and all else including pulleys, tensioner, belt, hoses, p/s hoses etc. When he had timing cover off and valve covers off I went and looked at the internal parts and no corrosion bad wear marks or sludge at all. Just saying.
An interesting idea came up - after several "What oil should I use?" questions, mostly because of the 5.4L's tendency to tick, why not make it a sticky? You decide!
Poll is now open. Vote away, folks.
And keep the conversation civil my main personal rule is if you're going to post "facts," be ready to back them up with references. Anecdotal evidence is not evidence.

I run motorcraft oil but I have a wixx oil filter on it right now, but when I got it a couple months ago it had stp on both. I don't know what to think. and it runs bad.
I figured the manual can't have too bad of advice, so bought Motorcraft Synthetic blend 5-20 with the Motorcraft filter. New engine had 4,000 miles on it when I got it with a Walmart sticker on the window with Walmart filter, My oil change was the third according to Carfax. The Walmart oil was black and thick.
WOW- Page 56! I read through it... new to the forum here. Highest compliments fellas.
My kid went and bought an 05 f150 without dad's help... welp, here we are.
So I would like y'alls opinion as to how to best address a neglected engine- never had this issue in 30+ years of changing my synthetic oils every 5k- whether I flush with a product like Berryman, MMO, or anything of the like.
My fear is that we dislodge something that clogs up the oil flow, blows out a seal, or something bad like that.
Should I just change with my favorite Mobil-1 (with FL820S filter) and send it, planning for a short change around 3k miles?
Thanks in advance

i would do a flush, switch to 5w30 (and hood filter) i’d fo at least one short Oci, but might do additional flush/short oci depending on what you see in drained oil or inside filter (if you cut it open).
i think 05 you can pull vct solenoids without have to oull valve cover. if so, you might do th that and inspect the screens.
“neglected” can be a wide range of neglect, hopefully it won’t be catastrophic situation.
any chance he lucked out and got a 4.6 and not the 5.4?
Do you have the maintenance records? I'd immediately do a timing job, replacement of phasers and upgrade the chain guides to metal ones. I'd also do plugs and wires.
As for a flush, I wouldn't tempt fate. I'd just do an oil change with your choice of oil and go with 5,000 mile intervals.
Also look into the history of FL820S & FL500S filters (their interchangeable if space is allowed) among other motorcrafts filter media ripping.

I bought mine less than a month ago. It has 223000 miles on it. The first day I got it I took it in and said Oil Change please. I have no idea what was put in it. But I will make sure to ask for 05w/20w next time. But the question is Oil or synthetic? Synthetic makes my wallet hurt. I have only use synthetic in my wife's caddy. Also, the only thing I know a about Phasers I learned from Star Trek. Now I have to see what this VCT thing is all about. My wife has been asking about a ticking sound. At 72 who can hear ticking sounds.
