Oil gushes out and makes a huge mess from some engines Fumoto makes extreme good sense in these cases. Oil came out so fast from my 6.4L Powerstroke that the Fumoto was a godsend. Available with a nipple for vinyl hose to keep things even cleaner. I drained directly into empty gallon jugs. Filled one, closed valve, put next in place, repeat.

The 2,7EB comes with a big yellow plastic no-tool plug with bayonet mounting. Sadly a Fumoto doesn’t fit and Fumoto-like options are 2-3X Fumoto price. Some report the yellow plug is fairly easy to only partially remove to limit flow rate, splashing, and mess.

Yeah, I wanted to ask if higher mileage vehicles burn oil which leads to using "thicker" oil.

I have one more low OCI oil change after my timing job left to do (1 at 200, this one at 1500) with the Motorcraft oil... but in another 1500 before I head to FL, I'm definitely going with the new Rotella 5w-20 for gas engines. It meets several Ford oil specs (though not the *930A spec for our trucks), but I figure it's gotta be good stuff (because Rotella). Either that or Pennzoil Platinum Ultra. I didn't like finding varnish inside my timing cover (none on the cam areas), even despite a lifetime of 3k OCIs with Motorcraft.

That could be normal, depending on the amount. The PCV side of the engine seems to always varnish no matter what. But a 5k interval with a good oil seems to keep this at a minimum.

I wouldn't use anything but 5w-30 (or a 0w-30 in the cold) after doing the timing job. our favorite internet FordTek is also standing by this advice. Your truck your choice, run what you're comfortable using.

I go back and forth with the viscosity: thicker oil for higher pressure, but higher pressure (coupled with the new Melling pump) can blow out seals (like in those tensioners). Redesigned followers increase pressure and direction of oil on the cam lobes. Oil must be thin enough to properly get through the screens in the VVT solenoids. "Thin as you can, thick as you need." Either viscosity can be justified for different reasons... my '04 truck went 150k using only the Ford semi-synthetic 5w20 (and that's with the earliest versions of the VVTs, phasers, and tensioners) so there's no reason it couldn't hit at least that with upgraded parts and a full-synthetic 5w-20.

My main question is if anyone has tried the new Rotella for gas engines, regardless of viscosity? Either way I'm eating my words, as Autozone has a sale on Pennzoil Platinum ful-syn 5 qt jugs for only $17, so I'll be picking up 3.
