I go at it from the top with a regular oil filter wrench. Pull the 10mm bolt and remove the intake tube, access is pretty good if your arms are long enough.

On the trip home, after diving for about 3 1/2-4 hours in 100 degree heat. my oil pressure went to zero. After sitting, for about 20 minutes, I restarted and was able to drive another five miles before the same thing happened again but this time with a "rattling" noise. I stopped, had the truck picked up and taken to my mechanic the next day. He was unable to find anything wrong with the vehicle and suggested I add Lucas Oil Stabilizer, and/or use 10w30 instead of the 5w20. The truck is a 2006 and has 156,000 miles on it, and has not lost the oil pressure again, although I have only used it for short trips to work or running errands. One friend says the oil pump is at fault, and another thinks maybe the oil pick up was blocked temporarily. Yet another says that with the heat I was driving in, the oil lost it's viscosity and wasn't able to do its job.
So do I change to 10w30? Add the Lucas Oil Stabilizer? Stay with 5w20? Or...?
10w-30 diesel oil ( I'm kinda partial to Chevron Delo XLE semi-synth) and a quart of Marvel's Mystery oil. If you have sludge problems, this combo will go *BLACK* within about 2,000 miles. Lots of detergents in diesel oils, they can hold a lot of suspended crud. That oil is also at the top of the range for a 30-weight, If that doesn't get your pressure back into the running range, you have bigger problems. You might actually have bigger problems, but this or a 5w-40 can band-aid certain things for a few thousand miles until you can get to the fix.

Large channel locks, go at it from the bottom.

Thank you for your input. The pressure has been fine ever since I picked it up from the mechanic.

Default Lucas additives

Hey everyone

Just picked up an 06 F-150 Lariat. She’s got a 5.4 3V with 115,700 miles under the hood.

Good thing is all maintenance and service records have been accomplished.

Now I want to change the engine oil, and I was told to use Lucas oil addictive. I’ve never used this, but I hear good things about it. Especially for high mileage engines.

Any thoughts???

Thank you in advance.

If you use a quality oil and change it on schedule, you don't need additives. Of course others will disagree, but that's my 2 cents. Search the forums here. Metric butt tons of info on oil and additives.

Recently bought a 05 Screw 4x4 with the 5.4. It had 236k when I got it and had the tick. The oil needed changed so I put in mobile 1 full synthetic 5w-40 heavy duty diesel oil because of the additives so now that it’s at 240k I’m about to change to 5w-40 full synthetic mobile 1 gas engines. I also use a mobile 1 filter and I’ve not had any problems out of it! I might think about using the pennzoil advanced platinum full synthetic because I use that in my 09 Chevy with 520k miles

The highest anti-wear rated 5W30 oil is AMSOIL Signature series synthetic , protects to 134,352 PSI / 124,573 PSI @ 275 degrees ranked #3

For high mileage motors 5W30 Valvoline High Mile Maxlife Synthetic ( Silver Bottle ) 123,470 PSI / 89,862 PSI @ 275 Degree's ranked #8

The highest anti-wear rated 5W20 oil is Quaker State Ultimate Durability Synthetic , protects to 121,396 PSI / 92,893 PSI @ 275degrees ranked #10

This came in lower but seems more stable , 5W20 Valvoline Modern Engine Oil Synthetic , protects to 120,531 PSI / 105,567 PSI @ 275 degrees ranked #12

5W30 Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic protects to 117,799 PSI / 75,861 PSI @ 275 Degrees ranked #14

These are results from tests on these SPECIFICALLY named oils.

You can pick up a 5QT Jug of Quaker State Ultimate Durability Synthetic at WalMart for $20 ! I've used Valvoline from the 70's till about 15 years ago as I believed Mobil 1 was a superior product based on no real science , not that it's a bad product but there's better products for less money including certain Valvoline products , I would have never guessed Quaker State was as good as it is, this is what 540 Rat runs in his 800HP 540 CU big block Chevy , it's the best value out there for 5W20 syn oil.

My 249K 4.6 will be getting the 5W30 Valvoline High Mile Maxlife Synthetic next change. I just got this truck and ran some Marvel Mystery oil before I changed the oil & filter and am currently flushing it with Valvoline 5W20 conventional oil for 1 or 2K , then I'll put a fresh motorcraft filter on with the Maxlife synthetic.

Thanks. Someone else posted this on another thread and I've been looking for it ever since. I went to Valvoline Syn Blend based on the recommendations of a price vs wear condition.
