You seem educated, so I am surprised I had to post this for you. Here are 3 articles explaining how synthetic oil protects better than conventional oil.

Keep it civil, everyone. This thread is supposed to be a controlled burn to quell all the threads on oil talk. If the blaze gets out of hand, the users responsible will be removed in order to return the thread to polite, factual discussion.

Default Cal tech

Cal tech did an excellent studY a few years ago on oils. Yes the leaking seals deal was shot out of the saddle.yes syn works much better then Dino oils. What they came up with is that amsoil was best followed by mobile 1. But they said that the diff was so miniscule it didn't justify the additional cost. Now then this study was done with motorcycles where the stress do to heat and rpms is much greater. There was a pretty good drop off after the top 3 syn oils. I just completed a lifter, rocker, and complete timing replacement. No bad lifters and phasers were fine. Chain guides were toast on upper passenger. This was after 250k upper engine and Inside covers were clean only normal build up.I'll stick with the syn I use 5 20 in winter and 5 30 on summer in az

Default 5 20 or 5 30

I don't know if I would use anything else I have 250k on mine and using 5 30 now was using 5 20 after timing complete job. Lifters, melling 340 oil pump new vtc valves ,injectors etc. Got to say the front, valve covers and inside around cams looked good. Cam had normal wear but a lot less for a 250k engine. Only had one bad rocker. The lifters actually looked good I just put new ones in while I had the phasers and timing done. Used the steel adjusters. But the sync 5 30 works very good here in az and if you are on long runs.

Well i officially switched to Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 in my 2009 5.4 with 92,000 miles. Runs good so far in the few hundred miles ive put on it. But it also ran good with the Motorcraft 5w-20 that just came out of it....
