Speaking of 1 variable of oil to reach operation temperature

1 fall season I tried 5w30 syn Royal Purple oil in a 302 in my 91 mustang yrs ago for a drag event (to test if I could reduce ET). I normally would run the engine cold on the track & with the 5w30 the temperature increased much faster to a point that I dont even like to see when driving on the street (track rpms was turned to 6000 in 4 gears).
(The electric cooling fan is not used when making a pass)

Normal driving wise, one winter I tried 5w20 in that mustang & of course it got up to operation temperature faster & I got heat inside the vehicle faster.
When we started to get close to Spring & I didnt use the heater much, then the engine temperature was more temperamental & required the use of the cooling fan much more & so I switched back to my standard thicker oil.

The 5.4 uses cam phasers to adjust valve timing, and when they wear, the "tick tick tick" sound comes to play, causing most to think they need to dump a different viscosity oil into the engine to quiet the engine sound down; as they might have done years ago when lifter wear would cause the same noise, and sometimes would quiet down with a different oil viscosity.

Nice to see an older thread get reopened.

You only read want you wanted to see.

Believe what you want.

The timing system is hydraulic thats activate by a electric solenoid.

Agreed. Some however mistook cam phaser wear to valve lifter noise of long ago, and thought that thicker viscosity oil would solve it.

Some have stated that Ford required that the VCT needed a certain viscosity oil to work properly. I asked for proof on this on a Mustang forum (since the 3.7's and 5.0's use this same arrangement), but never got any; instead the mods shut down the thread because it turned into a chest banging contest.

All I know is, Ford says 5w20 and FordTechMakeuloco said 5w30. Both are adequate in the 5.4 3v. It doesn't matter IMO.

Cool, I was curious where FordTechMakeuloco posted it & this is what I found.

This is the ford tech guy that posts all the videos on youtube that most of us has viewed for 5.4 info when we replaced our timing system parts.

I could care less what he thinks. I have ran Motorcraft 5W20 in my 01 Superduty 5.4 (200K, bought with 9K on it), my 07 F150 with the 5.4 (have put 40K on it) and my 07 Expedition 5.4 (have put 45K on it). Before that I had a 04 Focus and a 01 Excursion, put 150K on them combined, they both used Motorcraft 5W20. So in 400K miles of driving with 5W20 Motorcraft oil, guess how many oil related/internal engine problems I have had? Zero, nada, zilch. I will stick with what works best for me.
