Default 5.4L 3v Head removal procedure?

Well, It appears that I must remove the head on my 04 5.4 3v. read why. I have read references to raising the cab to do this. What is involved? How high does the cab need to be raised? Is this really easier than removing the engine? Anyone have a step-by-step procedure for either complete engine removal or just lifting the head?

I'll be starting this after work tomorrow.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Does anyone know of an in truck procedure to pull the heads off of the 5.4L 3v. I have been told the cab has to come off. Is this true. So, out in the sticks we will see F-150 truck cabs hanging from trees instead of engine bocks....too funny

Nice .50 cent word "Necromancy". Yeah, I had to google it, must have missed that day in English 110 for vocab. To rise from the dead, bring back......Anywa, Gone Postal, you can make my passengers side cylinder head rise from the dead would be greatly appreciated. My oil passages must be clogged by the infamous Fram filter particles, therefore not allowing bank 2 phaser to work properly. Not sure how to clean it up, beside pulling the head and getting it reworked.....any thoughts?

These procedures are outlined in my Factory Ford shop manuals, but it's too lengthy to type it in here and post it.

I'd try going to the local auto parts store and picking up a Chiltons for 20 bucks. At the very least, read it at the store if you don't want to spend the money. It will give you what you are looking for.

Unless someone here as an electronic version of the procedure and will cut and paste it.....I'd opt for spending the 20 bucks. Then you'll have this procedure and many more.

While the Ford service procedure for R&R the heads requires pulling the engine, you can access the cams and phasers without removing the heads. The R&R for both cams books at 7 hours.

I recommend alldatadiy.com over buying a Chilton's.

Have you read the TSB regarding the phasers for the 04-05 trucks? http://www.stangnet.com/images/stori...s/06-19-08.pdf

I think it's more likely that people learned the word necromancy from games like Diablo II rather than English class.

Seems as though we should start a listing of area shops that are familiar with the removal and replacement procedures of these heads and VCT's. Removing the passenger side head without a lift and the proper A/C recovery equipment is not some I can (or really want to) do in my garage.
Any ford Certified Mechanics in the Houston area want to respond?

I agree. It seemed the original poster was looking for the cheapest way to obtain the information, hence my statement of telling he/she to go to the auto store and read it, or buy it. The "real" manuals are a bit more, but well worth it as we know.

Thumbs up

alldata says to remove the engine from compartment. That being said go to a shop and have them discharge the air conditioning system and you would have to remove all matter of crap like the radiator and power steering pump. I think the real issue is #1, obviously you would need the clearance to make this easy and #2, the in-vehicle repair will have you bent over the body to reach into the engine bay far enough to get to everything, especially the stuff in the back of the engine. Still, if I were doing this I would opt for the in-vehicle repair. Then you would not need to disconnect the engine from the tranny and all that FUN stuff.

It would be cool to make something like a harness to suspend your body above the truck like something out of Mission Impossible when he sneaks into that white room with the floor sensors to pull info off that computer. A harness like that suspended from the ceiling would be awsome. I better start making and selling them. I could be a millionare!

Jimbo's awesome lazy-*** mechanic harnesses. Comes in all colors.
