5.4L 120k Cam Phaser Issues, Need Advice

The 5.4L has a chorus of noises it can produce. Hard to seperate out especially when all mixed together. @BadFish523 described it pretty well here. I might add that loose roller bearings in a rolller follower can 'tick' really good on startup because the thin (5W20) oil drains off during soak. And they are oiled basically by a drip system. When cold thicker oil reaches them, they may quiet down slightly - then get louder as oil heats and thins out. In my opinion - the 'tick' is more likely from manifold OR roller/followers OR lash adjusters not staying pumped up against valve spring pressure.
Phaser's knock, will be louder at hot idle and has more of a diesel engine sound.
Another tricky one - the 'thrust' bearing surface built into the front cam journal can make a faint 'KNOCK' at hot idle that sounds exactly like a soft rod bearing knock if chain guides are bad and do not keep phaser gear running true - allowing cam to walk forward / backward against the thrust surface.

Use oem phasers /oem VCTs -only
These are heavy duty high cycle parts . Do your self a favor drop oil pan and look for plastic ,clean oil pu . You can easily get it out of there to clean ,ground up fibers will clog screens . Plus if there you know you need to replace guides and tensioners . Tensioners --use old style steel ratcheting type with no seals to blow out .
Oil pan gasket is reusable , seal metal joints with sealant on assembly .

A ?
Lock outs don't fix any broken parts and degrade engine . Put that $700 towards a proper timing job . Phasers do go bad but that's only part of the problem . Poor oil pressure and blown plastic tensioner seals are a major problem . Use steel ratcheting tensioners with no seal to blow out . Use oem parts . VCTS ,lash's ,rollers phasers were all upgraded . Melling has a new high volume oil pump the 340hv . All this can be done diy if you have the will and the help on here . But its not cheap a full timing job runs around $1400 in oem parts . Don't use aftermarket phasers .
Not much in the way of special tools ,the phaser holding tool being a good one . Pulling cams avoids the expensive valve tool . Read svares final fix sticky .

I’m here close to Summit Racing and the engine rebuild they sale has the cam phaser lockout installed as does the Jeggs. Should I be Leary of these motors that have the phasers locked?

Another thing about the 5.4L was that from very late 2006MY to early 2008MY, the thrust washers/bearings would go bad making a horrible knocking sound and allowing excessive crank play. (FordTechMakuloco has a video on this)
@GBTexan Yes, you should be leary of rebuilt motors with phaser lockout kits. (also, the correct word is "sell" not "sale")

Thanks for reply, chalking up my bad grammar to a poo day thank to Fords cam phaser fiasco.
My situation, 08 F150 new motor at 95k due to spun cam after phaser failure. Now 144k and the old codes P0340 and P0344. I’m Leary of rebuilding with the OEM parts as that’s what I did last time and it only lasted 50k. Is there a guide that’s simplified and comprehensive?

I haven't seen any guide on how to do the timing set. Best case would be to watch FordTechMakuloco's four part video (on YouTube) on doing the timing set on a 5.4L 3 valve.

Am I Insane?????????
Ok I’ve read for F ing days, literally. 08 5.4 3v flex, 50k miles on rebuild. Changed oil and put 10/30 with Lucas “like a nim rod” after pulling my head from **** I had a thought. Why not change to 5/20-motocraft filter??
I drove to Walmart in truck 12mpg after reset of mpg tracker, after oil change on way home 20mpg. Truck no longer sounds like Diesel engine, all pep in motor has returned.
I feel like either I’m setting my self up for a hard fall or I’ve fixed my truck. Meaning always motocraft and 5/20 very 3k.
Can anyone weigh in?

So you're saying that your fuel mileage has gone from 12 to 20 just by changing oil weight? The only time I've seen an increase from oil in mine is going from regular oil to full synthetic. Hell, I just replaced tires and didn't pick up anything. Did the whole timing system and oil pump... No change.

Almost
300 miles before all this hell added k&n “lifetime” air filter. I don’t know what to think. I won’t look a gift horse mouth though. My **** be changing oil on the Reggie
i think the VVT needs the thin *** oil to function properly.....what do I know though
