5.4 to 5.0 engine swap
#11
No I’m not being sarcastic but I may have used the wrong word. Yes I have a 17’ 5.0 but I also have a 98 5.4 and an 05 5.4. The 5.0 and 5.4 and just different animals. In my experience the 5.4 has better off idle torque and pulling power. The 5.0 is “faster” I’m sure but the 5.4 is just a great truck engine. How many times has ford used the same engine from 150-350? I’m sure more than once but the 5.4 comes to mind. At any rate I would just replace with a 5.4 and save yourself the headache

Tell that to the numerous members with well over 200k or 300k on their original rotating assemblings in their 5.4s... no matter what you're looking at an ECM and wiring harness swap. Not worth the money or time involved, there's no unique factor. Since you'd have to swap harness, go with a 4.6 or 5.4 2v if you're worried about timing parts. My '97 4x4 Flareside 4.6 5 speed was posted in the picture thread and was quite the fun truck with "only" the 4.6.

The 300 I-6 comes to my mind first.

I’m not knocking you at all brother. If you want to do the swap then go for it. I for one like doing unique things because of the learning process involved. If you decide to do it, keep this thread alive and post progress to it.

wasn't plugs the only issue with the 5.4? i had all mine done and never had a problem.. only issue i had was my transmission went at 150k

There were a lot of issues other than plugs such as cam phasers. However I’m sure you can get a lot of miles out of a 5.4 if you take care of it but that’s the case for all engines. I just find it to be an inferior engine to the 5.0 and I don’t want to deal with those issues if they decide to pop up during any part of my ownership

Renaissance Honky
Getting a junkyard 5.4, manifolds, and y/cat pipes, ECU, et.c and bulletproofing the engine will cost a literal Metric Buttload less and be easier than putting in the 5.0. Once you get a few things taken care of the 5.4's are solid; the engineers and accountants got too cheap in a couple of places, and it's pretty easy to take care of it after you get the front cover and valve covers off.
Then again, I'd love to pull mine for a 6.2 or V10...
