Some Ford dealers will recommend a new engine if the spark plugs need to be changed and they don’t want to do it....not even a stretch

Do you really want to take their advice as final?

Just an update. 400 miles later and truck still running great. I'm cautiously optimistic the low oil levels were the issue.

interestingly to me as previous owner was also told he needed phasers and this and that and probably a new engine (that's why he gave up on this one)...I have done the usual maintenance items as I would like to do them and with the help of many on this Forum...
  • oil change with 5W20 FULL synthetic and a Motorcraft FL820S oil filter rather than the cheap blend from wherever with a whatever filter
  • new air filter properly sized (cheap quick oil change place filter) with new air box seals
  • Top Tier gasoline after a couple of tank fulls of Top Tier and Chevron Techron Full System Cleaner
  • broken belt tensioner and pulley replaced
  • MAF cleaned
  • Throttle Body cleaned (surprisingly not too bad)
I've put about 800 miles on it and it has only exhibited a shudder and drop of RPMs once while in line at the car wash and that could have been due to cleaning the Throttle Body or a vacuum/air leak that was found and fixed...

I believe like many here have suggested, that the dealerships want to do what they think is either easiest, most profitable or expensive enough to scare you away...my local mechanics who say they have seen a lot of these engines mentioned to me that if I keep up on the oil changes and keep my eye on everything else, I could be fine for a long time...

YMMV and good luck with your choice

Bill

Glad to hear its doing good. I'm probably about 900 miles in on the new chain and all is well, except for another ball joint or something on the front end. By the end of this week everything should be nice and quiet and back to normal.

He stressed the importance of oil changes every 3k with this particular motor.

I'm checking oil weekly for the next few months to see if we are burning oil.
What was the reason you took it to the dealership garage in the first place? Was it ticking which made you think it was the phasers/timing?

I could hear the chain slapping on startup as well as while driving. That was the main indication something was not right. It started missing really bad at idle as well as driving around the time the chain slap started. Turned out to be a bad coil on Cyl 8 and the engine was extremely low on oil. I've been 800 miles without an issue.

Default I believe 5k is enough on my 5w30 full snyth 820s filter

What ever happened to filling the tank and checking fluids and oil . After all a blown engine is only $7000 ,don't worry be happy . Being a smartass to bring a point ,this engine burns oil you need to check it often .You are under the canopy filling gas ,pop that hood and look at all your fluids unless you are knocking down $500k a year . Low coolant /brake fluid /power steerring fluid and oil can really wipe you out . Take care of your truck or don't you brush your tooth either? Yes I said tooth .
I do an engine flush every other oil change and I run 1 quart marvel m oil .
Your MOM is done, take care .
