Default no 4WD HI light

Read through this pretty good thread, thanks!! Question though, my dash light is not coming on when I go to 4WD HI. What causes the light to come on, is it the transfer case motor, something up front or a combination of both?

Low works fine, is it the same transfer case motor for both or are there two motors?

Thanks for any help,

Thomas

OK, did some more testing. The front hubs are locked not because of a vac leak but because the valve is not allowing vac through in 2wd. Now also I can not rotate the front drive shaft (wheels off the ground) in 2wd so it seems that I am in 4wd all the time!!! I do not get a 4WDHI light (it sometimes flashes real quick but that is it) but do get a 4WDLO light. Is the vac valve not letting vac through in 2w because of a transfer issue or????? What controls and when is the vac valve operated. It is pretty late and I just wanted to get this out quickly just in case there were some ideas before I look more after I get home tomorrow.

Thanks again,

Thomas

Default Slight rattle that stops when put into 4x4

I have an 05 5.4 fx4 crew cab. There is a slight rattle noise coming from my front right wheel area when I am accelerating slowly in 2 wheel drive. This noise goes away imediatly when put into 4H.

Could it be the solenoids or the vacuum hoses? Anything else that would cause it to stop when put into 4x4? Computer showed no problems and engine light is not on. Does not make the sound in neutral or park.

Any idea what it could be? Or where else I should post this?

Also my right (same side) muffler is 'putting', both smoke slightly and also my truck is burning way too much gas (11mpg in the city). Thanks guys.

OK, ...I've been offline as my hard drive crashed. If the dash light isn't coming on there may be an issue with the shift motor, which is on the transfer case. All 4x4 F-150s have this whether floor shift or switch shift. You can tap on the shift motor with a non-metalic item (like a rubber mallet or hammer handle) to see if that helps...

Have an 07 4x4 crew cab. My daughter drove it an unknown distance on hard surface road in 4L, now it will not disengage. Any suggestions for how to get it out of 4wd?

Great info man, but in all honesty if you want it to become a sticky you will have to include a lot more and go more in-depth.

jimgmcc,
I don't know on that one. Does your daughter have a job (to pay for the repairs)?
