Thanks for all the info guys. Hit the transfer case shift motor with a rubber hammer lite came on and wouldn't come back on again when Itried to shift it in and out. Hit it somemore but can't get it to come on again. Looks like I'll need a new one. Looks like it's not to hard to change.

Same Problem
I live in Ohio...the 4 x 4 worked fine last winter. This winter, I turn the **** and the indicator DOES come on, but it is clearly not engaging. Any ideas?
2006 XLT...Hello everyone! I am new to this site, any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Melanie and welcome to the Forums, if all your fuses have been checked, two questions I have, when you move the selector to both positions does it indicate both 4wd Hi and 4wd Lo? Does it sound like it is engaging the transfer case?
If so maybe the front wheels aren't locking in. If this is the case it might be the IWE solenoid.
The IWE solenoid normally applies vacuum to the Integrated Wheel Ends (locking hubs), and disengages the hubs while in two-wheel. In four-wheel, the powertrain control module commands the solenoid on, cutting off the vacuum supply and therefore engaging the spring loaded hubs.
(Integrated wheel ends solenoid) is located on the passenger side mounted on the firewall.
Hope this is helpful.

Hello, I am not new to forums, I use firefighter forums quite a bit but I am new to this forum.
here is my problem and with the responses above I think it is the IWE but I woud like to run it by you all.
2004 FX4 - First thing, I switched to 4 WD Hi and low. Both indicators would come on in their respective switch position but it was obvious the 4WD was not engaging. We all know what 4 wheel low feels like. Everything felt 2WD. I tapped the actuator at the transfer case as I have had to do in the past and I can now here it sliding to engage. Now when I put it in 4 Low it feels like 4 Low and 4 High there is not really much difference but maybe a little more pull on the motor. But all I get is 2WD with clicking.
Everyting I have seen points to the problem of the IWE. What do you guys think?
Sorry, one last question. Since I had engaged my 4WD and the hubs did not lock in have I damaged something else?

Hey everyone just my two cents here..I was having isues with mine to this week..I talked to ford and they said that it was probably the actuators that ingage the 4x4. there are two of them one on either side, they also mentioned that there is one for the vacuum to engage it all..Mine stayed partly engaged and it sounded as if metal was grinding on metal kinda like brakes that are shot. I took it in and it was the vacuum line that was messed up and nothing else. worth a look anyways...good luck to all.
