Default 4x4 grinding issue

I have a 2005 FX4 extended cab 5.4 and the 4x4 seems to want to engage while I am driving. This happened when i was going about 65-70 on the highway. I pulled over and came to a stop and as soon as I stopped, it seemed to pop back out and the grinding noise went away and the truck acted like nothing happened.

Then when i tried to engage the 4x4 on the dash, it engaged but when i put it back in 2wd the 4x4 didnt want to disengage. I even had a hard time backing up while trying to disengage the 4x4.

I am planning to bring it in, but has this happened to anyone else? or does anyone have any other advise before i pay a dealer a buttload.

This is common. I'm waiting for mine to do the same. IWE solenoid I believe. They get water in them or something like that. Just needs to be replaced. Search it in the forum and you'll find tons of answers.

Really, why, this makes no sense to me at all. Just replace if before it fails and takes out other stuff....

almost as bad as gee the tire is a little low on air I could put some air in it but i'll just wait till it blows out and then replace it.

Thank you guys for all the help. Just installed it a little bit ago, so far so good. Only time will really tell. If it works you guys just saved me a couple hundred bucks. I guess i get to install a lift now.

Wow, really? You are a thinker. Like Skull31 said, it could be something else. Why fix something if it isn't broken?
