Question 4x4 FUBAR

So I have been having issues with the 4x4 on my 2005 F150 XLT, notably with the front end. The driver side hub seems to slip in and out of lock. Any speed above 15mph, and it starts slipping and clunking hard. Changed out the front axle (truck has 162K on the clock, plenty of metal chunks in the diff), and the problem has not resolved. Is it the actuator, or the hub assembly?

Statistically, its probably the control solenoid behind the battery. That's most often the culprit.

Or a vacuum leak if not the solenoid

It's pretty simple to diagnose. There are a bunch of threads on it. Do a quick search in this section of the forum and you'll find the procedure. If you have any questions about it, we can give you some more help!

You changed the entire front axle out for an IWE problem.. am I understanding that correctly?

Yeah, I changed it out on general principle due to the carrier being full of metal shavings (indicative of major spider gear wearing). I'll definitely have to check the solenoid though.
