4x4 does light up but I never use 4x4 in California. I've played with the switch and noticed at that time one of the lights didn't come on.

If you read this you will find that for our trucks the default position for 4x4 is engaged. When your engine stops the vacuum stops and the hubs engage. If your IWE solenoid fails completely you will be in 4x4 all the time or grinding trying to engage. It will probably cause many more problems later if you don't replace it.

That one should work just fine. No need to remove the battery or battery box. It is a little tight in there if you leave the battery in but I have big hands and managed to get it.

Most likely yes, it's the shift motor.

Just took the transfer case motor off today. Tried another one I had still nothing, shifted the transfer case manually from 2 Hi into 4Low light went off. Put it back to 2 Hi reinstalled the transfer case motor. Tried shifting into 4 Hi and Low and it worked.

08 is the same fix as all these above as long as the solenoid is your problem.
