They could be chewed up from the solenoid being bad and having a partial engagement. That might cause problems with them engaging. I personally would check out the vacuum lines and test the IWEs with a vacuum pump. They might not be bleeding off the vacuum and so it is engaging slowly or poorly. Those things should be checked before you spend money. That said you may be looking at some new IWEs.

Lol, because Ford and Motorcraft parts never break? If that were true I wouldn't be in this position to begin with.

I've never had a problem with Dorman or your-favorite-local-auto-parts-store brand stuff. And believe me, my luck is not that good.
