Default 4 x 4 not working.

I have a 2007, F 150 with 60,000 miles. Tried 4 x 4 today, not working in 4H or 4L. Truck had been working fine.

Any thoughts ??

Thanks
Harvey

Without more info it can't be diagnosed correctly. I agree with the posters above. There are many threads dealing with the 4X4 system and many quick tests that can eliminate or verify the source of trouble

Solenoids, IWE's and transfer case motors are common areas of failure, but without more data, it's impossible to lead you in the right direction.

That's correct, no lights and no noise.

I did search for similar threads and found some, some of the fix(es) were above my mechanical ability.

Thanks for the replays thus far.

Given no light and no noise, I'd try giving the transfer case motor a tap or two and cycle the switch a few times. It's an easy test to perform. In many cases it gets the switch moving again.

The Solenoid for the vacuum would be the next step I'd try and it's quite easy to perform as well. It's located on the passenger side firewall right behind the battery. Easy to get to. Some excellent threads on here show how to do it with pictures.

Give these a try. It may help and isolate what is NOT malfunctioning. Good Luck!

At some point in 4x4 history, someone felt it was "convenient" to make the 4x4 operation easier by installing actuators and electrical motors that operate the various 4x4 areas by the push of a button on the dash. In early days, the driver got out of the 4x4 vehicle, locked the front hubs by twisting a **** at each front wheel (this locked the front wheels to the front axle/differential), got back into the vehicle, and then with a separate shifter, engaged either 4 wheel low, or 4 wheel high to the transfer box (located behind the transmission to engage the front drive shaft and front wheels).

Today, there are buttons on the dash to do this. The driver either slows down or comes to a stop, selects 4 wheel high, or 4 wheel low button or switch, and a 4 wheel "brain box" locks the front hubs using vacumn or an electric motor at the front "pumpkin" to engage the front wheels to the front axle, and engages the transfer case to the correct gear (hi or low) using an electric motor.

So, what's not working on your 4x4? The front hubs not locking? The transfer case not engaging low/hi?

Another member suggested searching 4x4 threads on this site. There's good ones to help you narrow down by performing simple tests of each area of 4x4 operation.

I also suspect 4wd not working on my 06 F150. Stupid question, if my 4x4 is engaged 4h or 4L I shouldn't be able to manually turn the half shafts going to the wheels correct?
