Bronco II Nut
06 XL, ext cab, 4x4, 4.6, 3.55 gears, 70,000 miles.
only run a few tanks so far, hoping for better mileage when i figure out how to add cruise control (and when i "learn" the rig a little better)
best mpg of 16, and worst of 13.5 (that was my "test tank", i ran one tank of gas driving in-efficiently, jack-rabbit starts, etc...)
my mpg may be off from slightly larger tires, still gotta compare with a gps.
power is great. hauled a good sized john deere (with front end loader) on a 16 foot trailer. not a speed demon in that situation, but got the job done. for occasional towing, the 4.6 is fine. if you hook up to something heavy every weekend, you may want to get the 5.4.
i'm starting to learn the way of the electronic throttle. "flooring it" just gives heavy hesitation, and engine screaming. BUT, only going 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down gives crisp acceleration for on-ramps and passing.
and it has real spark plugs.

I have a 01 crew cab with the 4.6L. Bought it in 04 with 40,000mi. Now have 236 000mi. Never had the plugs changed that I can remember. Have had issue with the coil packs though. Every so often I will get a service engine light and the truck will run rough. Code read will say misfire. Change the coil pack on said plug and problem solved. Plugs 7 and 8 appear to be more differcult to reach. Keeping fingers crossed.
I have a 4.6 and tow a bass boat constantly no problem at all. Up some nasty ramps too...
I can tell though, if I was to tow much more than that, I'd want the 5.4 So you gotta draw your own line. As bucko stated, the 4.2 works for his application, so he's right where he needs to be.
Don't let gas mileage steer you. I get 15 with mine as the norm. Thats no better than the 5.4 at the end of the day. Not sure what I get towing the boat, I'll check it out.
Until this thread, I assumed the 4.6's had spark plug issues too, is this confirmed???

I do not normally pull up dead threads like this one, but I am about to get truck and I am looking at 2005 FX4 with 4.6L. Now before everyone dog piles on me, it already has installed a PROCHARGER and has less the 95K on it! Wanted to get honest feedback what you guys think? Truck is clean been in PA and OH... Price is right and its red and has what I want... Loan is approved the dealer has it out at perf shop getting tuned properly, should I move on this or no??? HONEST BLUNT feedback! Want to hear from the experts!!!

It's not an fx4 if it has the 4.6, and not a 4.6 if it's an fx4. Unless someone put a smaller engine it or something (mustang motor maybe? ) having said that, I absolutely love my 2004 fx4

To question asked by FIREINTERCEPTOR, I finally stepped up to a V8, a 4.6. Great engine. I bought mine used with 110K on its odometer, and have since put an additional 6K on it the last 8 months. It has become my daily driver, and is used to pull a camper on weekends the wife and I venture out. Absolutly trouble free on this truck and engine. Very dependable.
Last week I bought a used Edge programmer and loaded the 87 octane tow tune, and have noticed even better engine performance and a slight increase in its fuel mileage. I average (when not towing) 14.7 MPG; that's a combination of highway and city stop and go traffic.
