Default 4.2L Alternator upgrade.

I am curious to see if there is an alternator upgrade for my truck. I know the old Gen 9's you could take an alternator from a full size van or F-250 7.3L diesel and it was a 130 amp alternator. I have a 2007 4.2L. It LOOKS like the 2006 6.0L has the same bolt pattern and same voltage regulator plug. It is larger, beefier and the post is in a slightly different position but same spot almost. Does anyone know if this 135Amp would fit in place of my 110 amp? It looks like it. Has anyone tried? I'm sure my belt would be SLIGHTLY tighter but not so much I would worry about it.

I don't know what the 4.2 alternators look like, but I put a 200-amp 3G on my 2004 5.4? It was a snug fit, but it works great.
If you get one, just make sure the regulator is compatible. The PCM on a 2004 controls the alternator and isn't like the old school plug-n-pray.
Mine is a white regulator if memory serves. The typical gray one wouldn't work. I'm going to assume your 2007 is similar.

Going from a 110 to a 135 doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle. You should be able to find a 200-amp (or even larger). They are readily available - at least for the 4.6 and 5.4. And yes - a 200 amp is overkill for most of us. It's doubtful your system will ever reach that kind of load - unless you're running huge amps, multi-batteries, etc. (I run all of those btw plus an air compressor). I also happen to like OVERKILL ! Lol.

PS: If you do go bigger, make sure your battery can handle it. Those 200-amp alty's will eat a cheap battery for breakfast! I would also recommend the 'big 3' wire upgrade (Google it). Ford improved their wiring over the years, but not by much IMO. So when in doubt - use larger wire!
