Default How much to fix cam phaser “tick”

Hey guys

So I need some major help here, I purchased an 04 XLT with the 5.4 triton engine for $4500, it was at 185,000 miles when’s i got her, once it hit about 187-188,000 it started making a ticking noise and will only drive properly in second gear now...in drive it kicks and the rpms go really high.

I have heard it has something to do with cam phasers...

So my question is - is it worth it to fix and how much would it be including labour? Or should I put that money towards another truck? This ones body is mint condition no rust no cracks and the paint is clean.

Thanks!

Default Phaser replacement

I would agree with a previous poster. The phaser tick has nothing to do with a shifting issue. You probably have two different things going on. I had my phasers replaced at 73842 miles, back in 2011. 1262 dollars. Running strong, and quiet, at 123000 miles today.

Is the phaser issue also on the 09-10 5.4’s?

Even 08? Good to know...

I only have about a $5,500-$6,000 budget currently for a new truck. I really don’t want an older one that is going to have a cam phaser or tranny issue right afterwards.
