Default 2008 XLT Radio Work in a 2005 Lariat?

I have a 2005 Lariat with the 6 CD in dash changer. The CD player has quit working and also as everyone knows has the AUX button but no port for an AUX audio hook up.

So, I also have a 2008 XLT with a CD Player (MP3 and Satellite Ready) that has the on dash AUX Port. Will this unit in the 08 and the AUX Port work in my 05 Lariat? Are the wiring harnesses the same or is there a modification needed? Also, will my steering wheel controls work with it as well?

I could care less about the CD Player really. My main interest is getting the AUX hook up so I can listen to some Pandora or whatever through my phone (Not interested on FM Transmitters or other options, trying to work with what I got on hand).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Why not just buy a decent aftermarket head unit with aux built in..

The antenna plug changed in 05/06 so the radio would not work.

As I stated, I'm trying to work with what I have. I just want to be able to hook up my phone or MP3 Player.

Via an 1/8" plug? No that won't work. The plug is a whole separate part that only came on the 2008 trucks. It's not on the face of the radio.

Aftermarket is your best bet.

I think he realizes that, as he also has an '08. My OEM radio from my '07 has the port as well, located in the top dash tray.

To the OP, I say plug it in and try it. It's been awhile since I removed my headunit, so I can't recall if the AUX port harness plugs into the HU directly, or into the vehicle harness first.

Default Need Some Answers

Okay, I took the Radio out of the 08 and installed it in the 05.

Both radios had the exact same wiring harnesses, only difference was the 05 did not have the wires going to the smaller plug to support the Aux input and the satellite radio (I am not concerned with the satellite radio). So, I took the pins out of the plug on the 08 (4 of them) and put them in the same location on the plug of the 05 and wired the Aux port to the plug.

I also installed the dash unit that has the Aux port made into it so it all looks factory.

So, couple of questions and issues I need help with. As 08XL Stated, the antenna plug is different btw the 08 and 05. Can I cut the wires and swap the plugs to make them work?

Also, the steering wheel controls are not working with the radio from the 08 but the Aux port does work and everything seems to be fine with the setup with the exception of the antenna. Is there a way to reprogram the unit to accept the steering wheel controls? If so, what do I need to do?

One other option, which I would prefer, is to use the original 6 disk changer unit from the 05. I did plug it up after I wired in the Aux port and it does not recognize that there is an input there. Can I have this unit programmed to recognize/accept the Aux Input? If that would work, it would take care of the antenna issue along with the steering wheel control issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am tired of messing with this thing at this point !!!

Thanks

Thanks

As stated, at this point you're best bet is to go aftermarket. You can't program these units to do more than they were intended to do. They just don't have that ability. You can buy an antenna adapter, if that helps, as you will need one with an aftermarket deck anyway. If you're interested, I do have my OEM single disk and Sirius tuner from my '07.

I have read on several threads that the units can be "flashed" by the dealer to recognize the truck/features that they are installed in. I'm not expecting it to do more than it was intended to do, just trying to see if there is a way for it to recognize an input if possible or if the other unit can be programmed to use the steering controls. What good would your 07 unit do me over the 08 I already have? I was asking for answers to the questions I posted. There are trucks that have the same unit out of my 08 that have steering controls and the unit allows it just as later models have the same unit out of my 05 that allow Aux input on the dash. Just trying to see how to make this work. If you dont have an answer, dont bother posting.
