05 5.4L Spark Plugs
Hello-
My 05 XLT is approaching 75k (5.4L). I've been debating about changing the spark plugs but have read all the horror stories on this forum and it's made me think twice about attempting it. I called the Ford dealer this morning and they quoted me $600 parts/labor + 1 hr labor per plug that breaks. Is that normal?
I've been debating doing it myself. I've done spark plugs on other vehicles I have owned in the past and never had an issue. But from what I read this engine is a completly different animal. I've done other things to my truck like brakes/front upper/lower ball joints etc.
Thanks.

If you've "read all the horror stories" then you've probably also read a lot of the success stories. Get the Lisle tool and the TSB and follow it to the "T" and you should be fine. Take your time! $600 sounds a little spendy (and that's coming from a guy in SOCAL).

I do tune-ups on them all the time. The thing I have found to work the best is to get the engine good and hot. Go dog the mess out of it for a minute or two. Then change the plugs. Pull one coil and one plug at a time. I have been very successful that way.

I been reading the horror stories and the success stories, called around to a few dealerships here in Oregon. One told me worse case $1500! The other was $465 plus $90/h to fix broken plugs. I have 51k on my 05' 5.4L and I think I've decided to wait until they are due to be changed, try changing them and if one breaks I'll stop and just go trade it in. Less stress about it and it can be somebody else's problem.

Do NOT follow this advice on ANY engine with aluminum heads!!! It is, in fact, bad advice for any engine when changing plugs.
