2008 FX4 Tries to Engage by itself in 4WD while driving on the highway? NEED HELP!
I have a 2008 FX4 and the 4 wheel drive tries to engage while driving down the highway by itself. When I stop it makes a loud noise and engages itself once I stop. When I engage the 4 Wheel drive myself it will engage but the light will not come on. It started a few weeks ago just doing it every couple of days. Now it does it about every 20 miles I drive it. Can you help?

Sounds like the IWE solenoid mounted on firewall behind battery. Mine went out on the way home right after I bought my truck. Searched on here, and found these are prone to going bad. Replaced the solenoid, and problem fixed. I think it cost me around $30 and about 10 minutes to change.

No, it would come and go. But mine was on more than off. When yours is making the noise, put it in 4h and see if noise stops. Then you'll know if it's the hubs "slipping" trying to engage making the noise Hopefully it's just the solenoids and not the actual iwe's. Do a search here. You'll find plenty of info on them.
