I have a 5.4 that has individual coils and they rarely go bad but I have replaced on. I dont know much about the coil pack for the 4.2 sorry.

I'm on my original ignition coils. I've done plugs twice, wires once and the pcv. That's all I've done engine wise in 115k.

The motorcraft 5w20 blend is great to use in all these engines.

Oh boy, the age old oil question lol. Try searching the forum and you will find many threads on this and most of them degrade to arguing. Yes, there is benefit to using full synthetic oil. I will leave it at that for my input about oil. Simply yes there is benefit.

The coil seems to be the most popular failing item on the 4.2 when it comes to misfires. It's a fairly easy item to do on your own.

My 2006 4.2LV6 went 200K+ before the intake gasket started leaking enough that I had to swap the engine. The coolant started leaking into the heads enough that I was getting hydro lock on warm starts and white smoke sometimes when running. The spark plugs are easy on the V6, not like the V8s. The coil pack is a breeze also. I would pull the plugs, look for signs of coolant leaking into the cylinders, and go from there. Good luck!

I wouldn't freak out over this. Most likely, you have a fouled plug. I would do as suggested and do the plugs and wires to start. Coil can wait, unless you have the issue again. Coils today rarely go bad on vehicles. You don't have to worry about breaking plugs off on the 4.2. It's a simple change and should take you about 30 minutes. Try this out and check back. I agree with the others, the 4.2 v6 is one of the most reliable platforms you can get.

Yeah, ignition coil pack by the #3 wire may be cracked. Common issue. Replace that part you'll probably be good to go. Had to do it to mine, and fixed it. I think it had the same error. Noticed it when it was raining alot. Mine's got close to 158K now, so I really do need to replace plugs n wires, which I have, just been putting off since it's been running ok.

Default Trouble is if you don't learn to fix it yourself

How many times do you want to pay $650 on each failure .
