You might want to switch to 10W-30 high mileage synthetic. I too saw a small increase in oil consumption with my 2007 4.6 V8 when I got to the 120K mileage. When I switched to 10W-30 high mileage synthetic, it stopped altogether, and I could go to a 5 to 6K oil change interval without adding oil.

However, you have issues with your engine, where as my engine does not. I would first address your cam phasers, then start with a fresh oil change, and then monitor the consumption.

Would the heavier oil be worse in the winter I'm in Minnesota?
