i just traded a 2007 fx4 (i loved it) it has the dreaded 5.4l with the funky spark plugs that love to break when you pull them other than thats about it... i changed 6 plugs none mine broke i got lucky...just FYI 2009 i think is first year heads got a make over with a diffrent spark plug .... i got a 2009 lariat 4x4 for 21,500 look and shop ! i look under the hood of the 2009 and feel way more comfortable getting to stuff like coil packs and plugs !!hope this helps!!

2008 is the first year.

f150's have their "issues" but the motor is strong on theses things.. the truck is just amazing.. ford has always had good quality interior.

motor issues if the truck hasn't been maintained properly..

you will run into

cam phaser issues (diesel sounding motor)
timing chain rattle

exhaust manifold leaking causing a "ticking"

plugs breaking if you don't change them before 100ish K

and a few water leaks.

sometimes you will get tranny issues (reverse band)

fix them all first and you will never have a issue!

I have a 2007 that's been supercharged for the last 40k miles. It has 109,000 on it right now and the big thing really is maintenance. They are good trucks, but they have their share of small to big issues. Not much different than most others. I don't think getting one would be an issue.

I agree i have 140k on mine and i don't even have cam phaser issues.. just a leaking tensioner causing 1-2 second startup rattle.. never had a plug break on me... (thanks to tax return i'm doing a full timing job here shortly just to be safe)

im dealing with clutch pack issue atm though

I WOULD love to do a SC but i go mudding to much and thats a lot of money to go wrong

I have 128K on my 2007 STX; it has the 4.6, and its been touble free for me. What's great about the 2004 to 2008 F150 models is that they have tons of good quality used parts available on eBay or your local boneyards. I've upgraded to leather, a sliding rear window, leather wrapped steering wheel, all for cheap. Great truck to keep it running on a easy budget.

Took a look at this 07 f150 crew with 73000 miles Its a nice clean truck has a 5.4 Carfax says its been serviced by a ford dealer most of its life .Ford guy says spark plugs are the biggest problem but with 73000 miles he says it maybe better to change them soon cam phasers aren't a big problem if you change the oil at normal miles its at a GM dealer and at 15000 its not a bad truck

Any engine after 10/2007 has the updated head design, its not the 07 vs 08 debate. Some 07's have the new head. My 07 has 142k trouble free, noise free miles on the 5.4.

Be careful the 5.4 engine its not the better one, spark plugs can Be very difficult to remove, once I had to remove the engine heads just to remove them and it was very expensive, the cam phrasers start to make a sound too, very common in this engine

Whoa. Let's slow down. There's no "better" or "worse" with these engines because that depends on your required application. A well-maintained 5.4 will run circles around a 4.2 or 4.6 and the problems with the cam phasers mostly had to do with owner neglect (bad oil / too long between changes) as has been ever-so-extensively discussed here. Also, the spark plug issue has been corrected. I'm sorry you had such an extreme case of problems with yours, but it's just that - an extreme case and not at all the norm.
