Default Faulty Fuel Gauge?

I have noticed a couple times now that on my 06 F150 XLT, the gas gauge seems to act funny. This morning I got in and the gauge was at just barely below 1/4 before I started driving. After I got to work, which is about 25 minutes of highway driving, the gauge was right on 1/4! But while I was driving, it was just above 1/4!!? I went and filled it up and it took 24.84 gallons. I believe I have a 26 gallon tank (how can I confirm this?) so that is less than 1/4!

I also have noticed that it seems to take some time before it actually moves off of full. Then it drops down to between 3/4 and 1/2, which takes about 10 miles.

I was running a full can of Seafoam on this tank if that makes a difference. I had run a full can on my other truck and didn't get this, so I am doubtful that would be the cause.

Thanks!

There is a connector somewhere under the drivers side door area that may be the culprit.

Would it be in the wire channel under the kick plate?

Hmmmm..... I am having a similar issue. Mine is all over the place. To the point where it's not even ON the actual gauge.

Get a picture of the location and connector?!

It's wanting to mate with the battery charge gauge. That's severe for sure.

Bucko, it's never in the same spot twice. This week it is staying below "Empty"

No I have not had time to figure this out yet. Possibly this weekend.

The mating is done!

I'd be looking at the fuel sender in the gas tank. Before I'd drop the tank (or remove the bed to get at it), I'd locate the wire from it running to the cluster, and try grounding it to see if the needle responds, indicating that the gauge and wiring is good.

I had this problem in my 05 Mustang. Turned out to be something called a 'stepper motor' that drives the needle. Took it to a local speedo repair shop, it the tech fixed it and another motor in about an hour.

I'll look into both. The needle TRIES moving when the truck starts. But ultimately has been in this spot without moving
