Default No brainer for ME....

There's not much else that commonly fails on the engine itself. I'd rather keep my original engine and just spend $2500 replacing the timing set. This way I still have the original motor and worry-free new parts. Even if these parts fail, they have Ford's warranty on them anyway.

I can tell you why I didn't......

ALL the components were 12 years old...... Wiring.... Sensors..... Etc etc etc etc....... Not to mention EVERY component in the engine.......$2500/$3000 to do a proper timing job on an engine with 250k + on it vs $4400 for a 0 time new engine installed by a Ford dealer and with a reasonable warranty? NO brainer for me..... To each.his own.....

Right I mean you’re talking about $4400 for a new engine so ofc at that price it’s no brainer. But he was mentioning $8000 for a new one. As for the sensors and wires and such, those don’t necessarily deteriorate that much over time (of course depending on your location). But if I was offered a new engine for only $4400 then yeah I’d say screw it, put her in!

I'm in a bit different situation than most I guess..... Have to drive, literally, across the country several times a year..... Plus, I really like this model of King Ranch due to the saddle leather.... So I made the conscious decision to restore it back to mechanically tip-top and convert the outside to a more modern look. I figured it was better to invest in a known quantity rather than dump a bunch of money into a newer truck. Why risk inheriting somebody else's problems. Might well end up, in short order, having to replace an engine/tranny on a "new" truck. (After coming out of pocket +/-$20k) I don't do car notes, cash, so buying a new King Ranch for +/- $60k was out.

Good call, he's almost done the only thing they found so far is one of the exhaust manifolds was cracked. Said they usually warped but this time he found a crack in one of them. Replaced both of them. Hopefully will pick it up tomorrow. They got off to a slow start on it yesterday had an unexpected issue on another job. Crack must have been very minor because I never had any kind of exhaust sound coming from it.

So just a followup here. Truck went in on Monday was complete by Wednesday. I've been driving it for a little over 2 weeks now, right at 500 miles. The total cost was $7300 plus tax. Everything was replaced except the intake manifold, injectors and COPs. Additional items replaced were power steering pump, exhaust manifolds due to the originals being cracked, those all fell in the $7300 total price.

Truck is running perfectly, monitoring via the enhanced data stream and there are no misfires or anything other than it runs perfectly. The truck drives as if it were new, there are no rattles nothing, power is quite a bit better and the fuel mileage is quite a bit better. . .(that is relevant, 5.4 never had good fuel mileage)

The engine I put in was the Ford remanufactured engine. It was 100% complete except what was listed above. So new water pump etc. The warranty is a 36 month 100,000 mile warranty serviceable at any Ford Dealership so if I have a problem when away from home they should take care of it for me. . .

I figure if I get 5 more years out of it, those are really cheap miles compared to buying something new. . . . Hey if I bought something new, I would probably lose nearly that much driving it off the lot. . .

Happy to hear you got it all sorted out..... Our minds think very much alike ....😉👍

Plus, I think it's fun taking something that some THINK is worn out and turning it into something unique.....
