Default 2005 XLT Center Caps -corroded ? Fix ?

My rims look OK, but the center caps are trashed
Debating on fixing them -painting, or just tossing them
If I toss them (into the garage) then I still need to fix the newly exposed area

Terrible pics -night time with the flash, will need to take better pics tomorrow
So is the whole center area 2 stickers ?
It rained -so the spots are rain drops....Late nite & just thinking

Here is daylight pic without the center cap
I think I prefer the center cap, but may be a PIA to clean them up ?
Thinking of painting just the caps black
Also planning on painting the wheels wells after seeing pics of other trucks
Time I have, $$ not so much

And a daylight pic of a center cap
Of course this is the best one out of the 4

Dorman has "no Ford" replacement center caps for a reasonable price. Or you can go on-line for used replacements.

Man, I just sold my entire set of 2005 wheels and caps for $120 bucks. Just taking up garage space.. I'd never seen this issue before.

Yeah...about 10 years of New England weather & road salt
I'm going to take the worst one off & see what I can do
Rather not spend $$ on center caps, no $$ -work very slow
Even a lousy coat of black paint would look better
I have plenty of sandpaper & steel wool

Another set of rims would work at some point

I am currently working on a restore project of a 30+ year old motorcycle, the aluminum covers have a lot of rust and oxidation on them that I have been able to successfully able to polish by doing wet sanding first. I usually start out with the rough sandpaper first, like 250 grit and gradually move toward about 1000 grit or higher, keeping the cover and the paper wet and rinsing a lot. After a couple hours, I can usually have all the pits and everything else good where I can put a little polish on an it looks new. Lots of patience and you may be able to clean them up. Good luck, keep us posted if you go this route.
Tom

I'm thinking of painting the rims black, more so after a closer look
Co-worker painted his black, very quick job -older Expedition -he's a kid
Not a great job but they look good compared to bad chrome
-he may have some paint left over

These are plastic pieces, so sanding will not shine them up
After taking the worse one off the "plastic" coating is what is peeling off
So the only way to fix these is to peel the entire plastic off
After trying that with the worst one its just too much time

No garage to work in right now
So I'm going to take the center caps off & paint the center that will be revealed
At present I'm not going to paint any part of the rim -still good chrome
Means I need to take each rim/tire off, paint, then put them back on
Wish I had done the rear when I was putting the new tires on
Painting the lugs might be a problem, maybe do those after the tires are back on the truck
So what paint to use ? Wondering how the painted lugs will stand up to mounting/unmounting
Rather do this right the 1st time
With the caps off better get some locking lugs....too tempting w/new tires

.
Daylight pics

In addition having tires replaced they have not been too careful removing the caps
This is just damage to the worst one

Tried taking the peeling plastic coat off this one, too much work
The plastic that has separated from plastic comes off easy, rest is PIA
--maybe a heat gun would help
About stabbed myself in the hand w/my small knife

Yea I did look, rather not pay $100 for center caps, not for these rims
I'd rather save the $$ & put it towards new rims some day
Main reason I bought a new MC is the old rims rusted -bike was 18 years old
Can't do that with the truck....wife would kill me

Wish I had thought of asking for different rims when I bought the truck

Why not plasti-dip them black until you can decide on a more permanent solution? Easier than painting on that chrome, and cheap, so its budget friendly. 4 cans will cost maybe $28.
