I'm chasing a crack/popping sound on my X3 right now, and after replacing the thrust arm bushings, retorquing the sub frame bolts, I noticed a tear in a CV boot, so I've got a new axle ready to go today. It doesn't make a sound during typical failed-CV situations, but as it's the only actually worn part, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck... Sway bar links and warn bar-frame bushings also lend themselves to the occasional snap/crackle/pop.
Thank you for the input. I will check those things out.

I still think my issue is in the rotating assembly. It is definitely something that spins that is making my noise.

I'm not sold. I've heard a few clips and watched videos of failing actuators and it sounds nothing like it.

Don't get me wrong. I value the advice. I've just spent too many years and too much money guessing. I'm going to be sure before I do the repairs. You may prove to be right.

Dorman no good in this instance?

Would the NAPA Echlin/Techsmart/Standard Motor Products IWE with three year warranty suffice?

I wouldn't trust Dorman or SMP for any product that I need to trust to not F*** my driving.

OE or OEM for most everything. Unless the price, warranty and ease of changing out the failed part makes it worth going with the cheap alternative... like I did the front axle of my X3 (curing the click).

Update:

I got an alignment done on saturday. Truck was making the noise on and off while driving there. Not a sound since. Put about 150 km on it and still quiet. Coincidence?

So, here's my solution. I changed the CV axle and IWE hub on the drivers side and all the popping was gone. Then about a week later the truck would pop while reversing out of the driveway and make scrapping sounds while driving until everything warmed up. Still drivers side. The sound would almost go away when I applied the brakes so my thoughts were stuck slider, brake caliper, or dust shield. I popped off the tire to have a look and the tire was very loose and wobbly. Lugs were tight. Changed the hub and bearing and now all the issues are gone.

I figured I'd post this since there aren't a lot of people who post their solutions and I hate that.

Thanks for all the help!
