I asked this question (after performing a search with no "direct" answers to my tach question); I got no answers.
I also have a truck (2005 SXT with a 4.2 liter) that has a basic cluster (speedometer, fuel, oil pressure, gas, and temp gauge) with no tach. I also would like to swap out this cluster for one that has a tach. In studying the wiring diagrams, it appears the tach lead comes off of the "box" (brain box), so I'm assuming this is wired into the existing wiring connector that connects to the guage cluster. It would make sense to me that Ford would not use two seperate wiring harnesses in their trucks (one for tach clusters and one without), but it sure would be affirming from someone who has done this (swap a tach cluster with one without) that can prove this theory.
I will be following this thread with baited breath for an answer!

I'm guessing from the second link (the first one was talk about RAM???) that the only reason the replacement cluster has to go to a dealership for reprogramming is so that the replacement cluster will have your true mileage on it's odometer. Other than that, the rest of the gauges (tach included) will work.
Good news indeed.
