Default 2004 Ford F-150 - Too much rust?

I’ve been looking at a few 2004-2005 F-150’s, this is a 2004 with 120,000 miles but looks like a lot of rust. Is this just surface rust? Or should I not even be thinking about purchasing??

Where are you? Looks average on a vehicle that age driven in the salt.

How are the rockers? Inner bottom door lips, etc?

most of that is just surface rust but the bed supports look like the metal is flaking and getting thin. I’d check where the frame dips down right under the cab. Water settles in the part and that’s the first part to go.

Thanks, I am in Rhode Island. Truck has been in NH and Mass. I’ll take more pics tomorrow. I’ll bring a screwdriver and ask if I can poke around. Everything else on the truck looked good, except for a small spot at the bottom of the drivers front fender. I just didn’t know if this is a bad sign to see that amount even if it’s just a thin layer of surface rust?

The front fender would probably need to be replaced if you want it to look good. Leaves, dirt, salt etc build up in the lower front fenders via access at the edge of the windshield cowling. From there, it rots from the inside out.

From the pics, it looks like the truck has the black plastic fender flares. Is it an FX4 model? Those flares are likely hiding a good amount more rust then you can see.

Yes, any rust is too much rust! Note that heavy flaking on the bed reinforcement channel!

We have rust here on Long Island (road salt), up there you must have a TON of rust.

Check out Autotrader, I got my 2004 almost 3 years ago from Tenn. Rust free. It was well worth the $700 shipping.

That's pretty normal where I live...my truck went from rust free to that in a few years due to the road salt. But no holes....other than my cab corners are shot

So if you buy another rust free one you will be ahead vs. buying with rust and starting out behind.
