2004 5.4L 188k - Good deal or stay away?
Looing for a decent truck under 8K and found a 2004 w/ the 5.4L engine with a newer rebuilt transmission. Description says: "New Timing Chains, Cam Phaser Lockout/Deletes, New Sparkplugs, New Balljoints & Newer Rebuilt Transmision"
Link to dealer: https://www.ridesourceautos.com/vehi...ville-nc.shtml
Is this a good deal or should just stay away from the 5.4L?

Is that the place behind the Wine 101? They have a number of trucks that are very clean. What does the Carfax say and more importantly, do they have all of the service records that state the timing job/cam phasors were changed if the Carfax doesn't list it?

That says nothing about the cam phasers or a timing job which is not to say an independent shop didn't do it but you have no idea one way or the other. I'd plan on both and if you don't do it yourself then...$1,500? $2,000? and I'd do it immediately including plugs and coils, oil pump, water pump etc. Build that cost into the price and decide for yourself if it's worth it. Truck looks clean and the oil changes were done.
Don't take chances with the 5.4 Triton

If non oem phasers used you will have to do them soon .And while you are in there a new 360hv oil pump . Unless you have documentation .Plus there are better old style racheting tensioners . Lashs and rollers should be replaced. Those run $265. Generally a timing job in parts is $1400. Not a fan of lockouts or tunes . Take a look at frame for rust and where it lived .These trucks require someone handy with tools .
Have your mech look at brakes ,struts, control arms sway bar ends etc . 4wd drive iwe system . Look at codes and pending codes .

pull the carfax
this truck looks too awesome to be true
granted, the Army has made me into a pessimist / cynic.
look at the coolant overflow tank - looks damn near new for a truck with 188K miles
its 1168 under book value - why?
flood truck?
accident?

It does NOT say new cam phasers. It says new cam phaser lockouts. If I'm not mistaken that gives you a check engine light and it means it was not fixed right using OEM cam phasers. I think you can find a better deal. Personally I stay the hell away from dealers.
