I have just read your entire thread and it is both comforting that it can be done and worrying!! The main thing I am concerned about is the cam guides on the head as new heads will not be an option for me and that could kill the entire project. Taking my cams off at the start and the heads at the same time is probably the way to go even if I don't have the luxury of seeing if she will actually fire.

Did you take your main or big end bearing caps off to check the bearing condition? Sorry if I have missed in your thread

I'm no mechanic either (I work in an office!) but I have spent a lot of years of messing around with vehicles and plant. its really not that complicated an engine by the look of it, the key things are going to be if there is damage that can't be repaired and getting that sludge out. I actually don't appear to have as much of the thick black tar like build up you had but I do have a lot of condensated oil in the cam covers. I think this should be easier to shift than the thick black tar.

I didn't remove any bearing caps. Just inspected and cleaned.

Surface rust is not much of an issue. Some fine emery cloth or #0000 steel wool will dispatch that quickly.

I'd suggest to remove the cam caps and cams and post pics for everyone to check and chime in.

That will give you some direction.

Well I had hoped to come back here today and say I have got the other rocker off and the sump and report back findings. Unfortunately something totally unforeseen has happened and I have got to take the truck back (at least for now).

It turns out that the UK duty had never been paid on it as it has been transferred within the USAF (who are exempt here), on trying to transfer to me the duty needs to be paid. This would not have been a problem if it had been thought of in advance as a value could have been agreed and the duty paid. As it is the person I bought off is liable for the duty as per the new vehicle price until that can be sorted (Probably around £6-8k of duty!). To complicate matters further she is coming out of the USAF on Wednesday.

The only solution we have is for me to give it back so It can be inspected if necessary and she will transfer ownership temporarily onto another USAF person until the duty amount can be agreed and paid. When all of that is done I will get it back...if I want it

I may be able to negotiate on the price too.

Watch this space.....looks like I will be changing my workshop plans for next weekend!

I’d take this as an opportunity to get gone from that truck!
