As you can see in this picture, my air filter has a black dust coming from the engine side of the air filter.

What could cause this residue from the engine?

How long has it been since that has been changed ? I would remove and clean the throttle body and clean your MAF sensor too..

The filter is doing its job, it doesnt have to be from the engine... thr system pulls air from the driver side fender, so alot of that is probably dirt with a little bit of water.. say if u drove in some heavy rain no big deal replace filter every 10-15k
