Help please I need suggestions on 5.4 3V running rough
I have a 2004 F-150 with the 5.4 3V. Started having issues with the truck having the infamous tick that sounded like a diesel not long after i got it about 9 months ago but it started running rough when i came to a stop about a month ago. This has progressively gotten worse over the last 2 weeks or so.It does fine when first started but it starts to spit and sputter once it gets to operating temp. I have replaced the cam phasers the VCT solinoids I pulled the codes and im getting P0171, P0174, P0345, P0011, P0021 and P0341. These codes all led me to believe that the camshaft position sensors needed to be replaced so thats what i did. I'm still getting the same rough running deal after the engine has gotten almost to Operating temp. this is getting costly really fast and i would greatly appreciate any ideas or suggestions on what i need to do next.........

first thing with the 5.4 is remove oil pressure sensor, screw in a tee put the sensor back in and instal a pressure gauge. If motor isn't showing good oil pressure ( on the high side of the specs ) when you have warmed up to operating temps, you will have timeing problems. You can put an awful amount of money in the truck and still have the same problem. If using 10W or 15W40 oil quiets it down look to the crankshaft main bearings for damage and resulting low oil pressure. A crate engine or junk yard is a good option.

Im sorry to say, by the codes im going to say you either have a bad timing cahin/tensioners or an oil pressure problem.
Like the post above, timing issues creep up with low oil pressure, also the chain can slack.
Timing tensioners with bad seals can often cause low oil pressure to the phasers and they will make noise.
You will want to have the following done.
1)Oil pressure test. you need over 25PSI idle HOT
2)timing cover removal and component inspection. Check for skipped chain, bad tensioners, worn guides. They will ALL cause noise and timing codes.
Ive noted 5W30 oil can bring oil pressures up a bit in worn motors.
Best of luck.

i just had all them codes in my truck 2005 ford expedition 5.4 and just fixed it what i found was the phazers were ok but replaceds them anyways the real problem was the chain guides broke on the left hand side putting hundreds of pieces of plastic in my oil pan but when it breaks the chain will skip and cause the missfire codes and cam position codes if your phasers are ok then you just need the timing chain kit its around 180 bucks comes with crank sprocket new chains all guides and tensioners then you will have to clean debri from pan its not that hard once you get into it but first pop your valve covers off and check the chain for tension i bet its loose as hell if you need any help just let me know also there is 2 vct solonoids that control the oil flow to the phazers that could be bad too but doubt it since your getting cam isssues on both banks

Also with these problem the screens ( spiders webs) get plugged or damaged from all the glugggg inside the VCT solenoid valves ( spiders ). Another byproduct of oil PSI.

I know my chains are slack the rattle a bit at startup. I removed the vct seal and poked a screwdriver and both chains r slack I have the kit from rock auto need phazers gonna replace them also due to a tick at warm up. Gonna pick up a couple of lash adjusters as we'll may have one that collapsing.
