Default '06 STX rear end fluid

I back the plug out of the rear end and try to stick my pinky finger in there to check the fluid and I can only go down about an inch before I hit the gears. My question is how much fluid should be in there and how do I check to see how low it is? I don't wanna stick anything down in there in fear of getting it stuck or breaking off.
Thanks

You should be able to touch it with your finger. Takes around 3 quarts, I just fill it until starts dripping out the fill plug.

If you have limited slip, ensure you add friction modifier.
