06 f150 tick
Hi guys
I’ve been on the site for a while and it’s been very helpful.
I need help with this tick coming from my 5.4. I’ve had the truck for a couple months and have driven me a lot to it myself to make the truck what I want
big country flares
suspension lift
35s with new wheels
airbags
three piece tool boxes
remote start
bqckup cam
pioneer apple play touchscreen
vct sensors
plugs and one broke coil
both front wheel bearings
leaf springs (1 cracked)
I’ve enjoyed working on the truck and thought I could figure out this tick but no such luck. When you listen to the tuck with a stethoscope you can’t hear the tick. The tick is constant with rpms hot or cold it does not change. The sound is loudest near the starter. It could maybe even be one of the cats or even a pressure plate.
Has as anyone ever heard anything like this please reply I could use an experienced ford ear. The link below is a 18 sec clip let me know what you think.
Thanks rocko

My guess would be exhaust manifold... very common on our year truck..

Thanks for the reply mark
ill pull it in the garage and look a little harder on the manifold on the passenger side. It’s a strange tick that’s for sure. It sound like a metallic ticking when your ear is near the cat on the passenger side. I’m not sure what kind of ticks the cats can have when they start going. Maybe even a small crack in the pipe or manifold. The strange thing is it doesn’t sound like an air leak

Mine has been ticking for a year now.. mostly when it’s cold out.. once it warms up it quiets down.

Sounds just like my '06. I put a half bottle of Sea Foam in it and drove 300 miles. Dumped the oil and filled it back up with 5W30 synthetic and it sounds much better. In one of FordTechMakuloco's vidoes he says there is a pin that goes into a hole in the cam phasers. With time the hole wears and gets a little larger and the ticking may be a result of the play that results in the hole.

Thanks mark
i agree with the phaser pin thought but what is strange when I listen to the top end with a scope I don’t here anything but the normal swooshing of the phasers and thats a pretty clear tick you would think you would here it. Maybe the tick is resignating through the exhaust and that why I here best in the wheel wells and even louder Uber the truck near the starter and cats. I’ve put the stethoscope from top to bottom and don’t hear anything at all. On the very back plug through the stethoscope I can here a very faint tick but even that don’t sound very loud.

I think the pin disengages above 900 RPM so maybe get someone to rev the engine a little while you listen under the hood. If the ticking stops above 900 RPM then there's the problem. If that's it then I guess it's nothing serious, just annoying.

It very could be a stuck lash adjuster/roller follower that is ticking against a cam lobe. Especially if it sounds whether the engine is cold or hot. In that case you'd need to pull the valve covers and inspect the cam lobes.
