Default 05 F-150 4x4 LOUD grinding noise at low speed

Hey All,
Need your help, I recently bought a 2005 F-150 lariat 4x4. I was told about a loud grinding metal to metal noise ( sounds like tranny) at low RPM's. It does not to matter if O/D is on or not. When I stop I feel some tension free up and the noise stops? My boss ( sold me the truck) says it has been doing that for awhile and has taken it in, had tranny serviced etc. Cannot find it! any help here??

Throw the truck in 4H and see if the noise stops.

If it no longer makes the noise in 4WD, then it's your "Integrated Wheel Ends" - aka IWE.

Side note - If you bought it from your company/your boss, I sure hope that noise was reflected in the price!

Depends on if the actuator took out anything else with it.

Ford -SUPPOSEDLY- designed the IWEs to have softer metal than the part they engage with - the hub assembly, so a failed IWE SHOULDN'T destroy anything other than itself. However, there have been reports on the forums of people ignoring the failed IWE and damaging the hub assembly, so YMMV.

In my situation, I wanted to avoid future complications, so I replaced the IWE on both sides, as well as the hub assembly on both sides.
Motorcraft IWE - $133 Each
Moog Bearing & Hub Assembly - $140 Each

My boss took it in several times over the years and nobody not even at the dealership looked at this. I assume the hubs are fried too at this point.

Did you end up checking if the sound persists with 4WD engaged?

It only does it once in awhile. Next time I hear it I will try it. Weird thing is the noise stops when I do so troubleshooting has been a pain. I was thinking last weekend when it happened it seemed like it was trying to go 4x4.

Well you were right, on my way home the noise started in. As soon as I switched to 4x it went away.
